Live Review: Big Day Out – Melbourne 2013

Review by Billy Geary
Big Day Out - Melbourne 2013Arriving at Flemington early on Saturday morning, there was an air of excitement amongst those arriving to see the first few bands. 2013 brought with it a rejuvenated Big Day Out, something that was much needed given the performance of the festival in recent years.

Despite the bright outlook, the Melbourne leg of Big Day Out got off to a shaky start when it was revealed to the gathering media contingent at the front gate that a truck break down had mean that some sound gear meant for the main stage had not arrived. The result meant that House Vs. Hurricane’s set was postponed to 8pm on the menial Red Stage and Me had their allocated set time halved as technicians battled to get the main stages ready.

Wes Carr: ‘Blood & Bone’ EP Tour Dates – February 2013

It’s a longstanding belief in native American culture that when someone dream’s of a Buffalo, they will soon return back to their heritage, back to their roots. Proud to announce the release of his debut EP ‘Blood & Bone’, Buffalo Tales is the new project for Sydney based singer-songwriter Wes Carr.

From his early days fronting Silverchair-offshoot Tambalane, to his well publicised success on reality TV, Wes has well and truly paid his dues and already lived several musical lifetimes, all before reaching the age of 30. Buffalo sees Carr return to his organic singer/songwriter roots and is an intimate and natural fit with folk and alt country overtones, that lets his music speak for itself.

Black Breath Australian Tour April 2013

Black Breath emerged from dark basements and dive bars in the belly of Bellingham, Washington in 2005. Bored by the region’s apathy towards trenchant and punishing music, they combined elements of punk and metal with doses of the garage rock of their hometown. Their sound is acutely classic without being painfully retro; a ripping blend of Entombed, Celtic Frost, Poison Idea and Discharge. Continue reading Black Breath Australian Tour – April 2013‏

Interview with Jess & Shea – Toucan

Interview by Lauren Sherritt
Shortly after their stellar performance at the Gold Coast Big Day Out, Jess & Shea of Sydney two piece Toucan sat down with our Lauren Sherritt (LS) for a quick chat.

Lauren Sherritt: Shea and Jess, you’ve kind of got gender ambiguous names! Do people have to check who is who?

Shea: They do!
Jess: People have to check sometimes.

For readers, Jess is our lovely lady and Shea the handsome gent.

LS: So, how’s Big Day Out going for Toucan so far?

Jess: Really, really good! We’re having the best time, we’ve had good crowds and it’s such an exciting thing to be a part of. Obviously being able to mix with the other musicians is a big part of it for us, just being able to be around and talk to all these other great bands. Also touring with the festival and playing around the country in different cities is a great opportunity.

LS: Is there anyone you have really enjoyed seeing so far?
