Gotye scoops ARIAs on eve of Australian Tour

Gotye has scooped the pool at the 2012 ARIA’s. He won more awards than any other artist including ‘Best Male Artist’ and the prestigious ‘Album of the Year’ for his acclaimed release, “Making Mirrors“.

Appropriately enough on the eve of his first Australian tour in over a year Gotye was also voted by the public as Australia’s ‘Best Live Act’.

The man behind Gotye – Wally De Backer – took one night off from his tour rehearsals to attend the ARIA Awards at Sydney’s Entertainment Centre. He returned home to Melbourne just last week after doing over 60 dates in iconic venues across the globe from The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles and Radio City Music Hall in New York City to London’s Hammersmith Apollo and Paris’ iconic Le Zenith. The tour also took in less commonly visited countries like Dubai, Poland and Korea, who have also embraced Gotye this year.

Album Review: deerRepublic – The Sweet Resistance

By Natalie Salvo
deerRepublic are a Sydney-based quartet who produce richly textured, indie pop music. It’s an effervescent sound that has seen the boys being crowned winners of the uncharTED band competition and playing amazing gigs like Splendour In The Grass. But for my money, this group sound like they’re just picking up from where Red Riders left off.

The Sweet Resistance is the band’s debut EP where the four tracks on offer have a common thread in that the glass is always half full. The group are on a constant pursuit for the next form of happiness and the soundtrack comes via some guitar-driven songs that you can also dance along to with glee.

Live Review: Refused @ The Palace Theatre, Melbourne – 15 November 2012

Review by Billy Geary
The reformation of Swedish punk icons Refused back in April sent fans world wide into a frenzy. For Australian fans, the hope of the long, long awaited Australian tour became a reality leading to two sold out Palace Theatre shows in Melbourne. The importance of this run of shows could not be underestimated with many in the crowd having to wait as long as 20 years to see the four men in the flesh.

With a giant banner covering the stage, the word ‘Refused’ emblazoned across it, the Palace Theatre’s expansive pit was already heaving. Without much warning, the band entered the stage and immeadiately tore into the title track of their classic album The Shape of Punk to Come. The banner was dropped about 10 seconds in, revealing the five musicians on stage to be completely losing it. Thus, what transpired in the following 70 minutes or so was something very special to witness. Without command, the sold out Palace crowd shouted Dennis Lyxzén s lyrics back to him, drowning him out at many points.

Album Review: NOFX – Self Entitled

Review By Lana Hall
NOFX are like that top quality hoodie you bought many, many years ago. Twenty nine years ago actually. Familiar and dependable, the years and washes haven’t changed it much at all and it’s easy to put on again and again. Self Entitled is the twelfth studio album from NOFX and it brings more of the classic NOFX sound – another album of short, fast, funny, sometimes political and sometimes personal songs. These themes have served the band well and continue to do so.

Musically, the songs on Self Entitled feel more pressured than other albums, particularly the tempos of ‘I believe in Goddess’ , ‘Ronnie and Mags’ and ‘Cell Out’ where riffs are super fast and words shout over each other to be heard. Remaining true to punk rock, there are no guitar solos or technical displays of prowess, just good solid chord progressions at a pace that crams eleven songs inside thirty minutes.

Blackmilk – “In Lak’ech”

Following a huge launch in Perth, Blackmilk’s debut album ‘In Lak’ech’ is out now through Fat Shan Records/MGM. Three years in the making, In Lak’ech is a twelve track album weaving through a fabric of rock, psychedelia and electronica.

Track four on the record The Prospector (2:48) showcases the more delicate and stripped back side of Blackmilk, with swells of strings and choral vocals creating a harmonious and lush soundscape.

“You guys are so damn consistent. This new tune knocks away expectations with some dense production and enigmatic twists. Want more. ” – Dave Ruby Howe from Triple J on ‘In Lak’ech‘

Luscious harmonies, driving beats and sun soaked guitars and keyboards create a blissful haven for your ears to swim through.

TV Snow

TV Snow: it’s a slang term for that haze of analog noise that you find on an untuned television. It’s also the name of a fresh-faced pop band from Perth, Western Australia. One sounds like harsh, tedious hiss. The other is melodic, tightly-wound with boyish energy and relentlessly dynamic. Sorry, there’s no prize for guessing which is which.

TV Snow – the band – came together a year ago, bonding over a love of rapid indie-rock rhythms and washed-out coastal melodies. Recording in November 2010 under the guidance of local stalwarts Shaun Sibbes and Lee Jones (ex-Eskimo Joe), the then four-piece spent a month in a studio on Perth’s north-eastern outskirts crafting what would eventually become their debut, self-titled EP which they launched in late 2011. Soon after came supports for blossoming local groups (Rainy Day Women, The Ghost Hotel, The Warning Birds) interstate bands (Bleeding Knees Club) and internationally touring acts (Lydia, USA).

Alex Watts & the Foreign Tongue – “This Haunting”

Melbourne based rock/pop quartet Alex Watts & the Foreign Tongue released their latest single, ‘This Haunting’ earlier this year, which was celebrated with an east coast tour including a packed out launch at Melbourne’s iconic Cherry Bar. Receiving national airplay and the attention of music blogs both in Australia and overseas, ‘This Haunting’, helped create something of a buzz surrounding the band, whilst showcasing their evolution since 2011’s debut EP Desperate Love.

This film clip was in part fan-funded, via a successful campaign on crowd-sourcing website Pozible, and is the directorial debut of lead singer, Alex Watts. The story is told from the point of view of an elderly woman in the grips of dementia, who has become convinced that the husband she once murdered has returned to haunt her, and claim his revenge on her life. Veteran stage actor Shirley Cattunar plays the role of the wife, whilst Alex Watts and Ana Kingsley appear as the younger versions of the husband and wife, in the remembered murder scene.

The M-Humm

Forward Sloth is proud to present the first taste of Brisbane psychedelic noise-pop band, The M-Humm’s double A-side single “Taming Tension” & “#2805” off the groups respective E.P.’s “I’ll Take Care of You, We Can Always Afford Rice” and “Termer”.

Following on from previous single ‘Eynoc ist Bunt tI’ Taming Tension is a somewhat misleading choice to represent the EP with the thrashing psych guitars and collections of noise being replaced with what the band calls ‘organ-pop’ in this comparatively short but sweet track. Taking its title from a Christian self-help book found on a train station seat, the initially improvised song meshes hip-hop drum machines, delayed vocals, boppy bass and wall of sound-like guitars into a catchy and deceptive upbeat world.
