DARK HORSES handpicked to support Beck and Sigur Ros sideshows!

DARK HORSES are a group who are about spectacle, romance, mystery, the transcendental. They are about manifestos. They say: “If it feels slow, play it slower.” This was written on the wall of their studio. They are about music, but also a lot about the things that exist around the music, that a lot of people in 2012 seem to have forgotten about. They say: ‘We look good so you can hear our music.’ They also say: “We wear black because Rock’n’Roll is dead.” All of these things are important.

Their sound encompasses all sorts of reference points, from the obvious -Kraftwerk, Spacemen 3, Radiohead to all kinds of other music old and new: Country, soul, pop, psych, hip-hop, whatever. Lisa: “and for spiritual courage John Lee Hooker and Billie Holiday are never far away.”

Live Review: Island Vibe Festival 2012

Review by Wanda De Verelle-Hill
Travelling to Island Vibe Festival is like a road movie that starts fast and slows right down. The urgency to make the ferry on time is relieved once on board the vessel and the opportunity to do nothing but observe how gorgeous the environment is, presents itself. As the mainland and pressure of daily routine slowly slips away, Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) comes into focus, full of promise for an exciting weekend ahead.

Having never been to this island before I am astounded by its beauty and grateful that it does not resemble its close neighbour the Gold Coast. Perhaps the need to approach it by boat has saved it from the tyranny of the high-rise and false glory of glamour. An initial exploration of the island reveals tree lined walking tracks, ocean views, whales heading south with tails and fins flapping, turtles bobbing up and down and manta rays gracefully gliding past. The ocean is pumping out a huge left hand break filled with surfers at Point Lookout, and Cylinder Beach is looking good for a swim. Already this is a great experience.

Q&A with Shep Huntly – The League of Sideshow Superstars (Harvest Festival 2012 Artist)

Interview by Life Music Media
The League of Sideshow Superstars return to Harvest Festival in 2012 with their high skill circus routines and extreme eye-popping sideshow stunts. We caught up with founder and front man of “The League” Shep Huntly…

LMM: Can you tell us a little about yourselves? What can the uninitiated expect from your performance?

Shep: We are four sideshow/circus artists that come together a few times a year to do a few big gigs and have a sideshow party. People can expect to see a whole lot of stunts and routines we are really proud of. They will see something they haven’t seen before and something they will want to tell their friends about. I mean have you ever seen a man attempt to pick up a car battery by his nipples???

LMM: When you’re not performing, what do you enjoy doing?
Shep: Drinking with friends and talking about sideshow stuff. Surfing, hang gliding and having sex.

It’s been a massive year for Sydney duo Nantes. “Jessie Ware will be the star her songs deserve… Devotion is a record filled with moments that bring you to your knees. 8/10″ – NME

‘If we’re talking pop singers, Ware could be one of the greatest.” – Consequence of Sound

As one of the UK’s break-out stars in 2012, Brixton’s Jessie Ware is poised to do the same in Australia.

After guesting on high profile tracks like SBTRKT’s ‘Right Thing To Do’, the 27-year-old broke away with her seductive, universally acclaimed debut, Devotion. Her electronic, soulful pop is delightfully restrained (see breakout hit 110%) and in equal parts immediate and classy. No wonder she’s a serious contender for this year’s Mercury Prize.

CD Review: Twelve Foot Ninja – “Silent Machine”

Review by Billy Geary
Just about every time you think music is becoming stale, over-saturated or downright boring, there’s always a band ready and waiting to put your faith back in music. Twelve Foot Ninja are one of those bands. Forming in 2007, Twelve Foot Ninja quickly rose to prominence, releasing two EPs packed with genre bending moments of reggae, metal, funk, dub and hardcore, sometimes within the same song. Their debut album, Silent Machine shows the same tendency, with added heaviness and polish.

After the first few verses of opener ‘Coming For You,’ for those new to the band one thing is immediately obvious, Twelve Foot Ninja aren’t afraid to mix contrasting genres mid-song. In fact, they thrive on it. ‘Coming For You’ is vintage Twelve Foot Ninja, blending reggae and metal, with a smattering of electronics evoking thoughts of Mr Bungle and Tomahawk. Throughout the record, the comparisons with various Mike Patton projects will inevitably continue, however to pigeonhole Silent Machine in such a way would be unfair to the band.

Q&A with Mik Easterman – THE LAMPLIGHTS

Q&A with Mik Easterman, drummer of Gold Coast 5 piece THE LAMPLIGHTS

:: What track changed your life ::
Underground by Tom Waits. Hearing that song as a kid was almost like proof that giants were real. You can almost hear the stomping of huge feet. Not only that but to realise that a melody doesn’t have to be pretty to be catchy was amazing.

:: What is your favourite Album ::
Rubber Soul by The Beatles

They are masters of their instruments and they have a message to share with you.

THE LAMPLIGHTS live to play music and you can find them most weekends plying their trade at unconventional venues all over South East Queensland.
