Phia releases new single “Do You Ever?”

A happier Feist mixed with a younger version of Björk? Or maybe the experimental playfulness and dexterity of tUnE-yArDs meeting the bittersweet wit of Regina Spektor? Whatever your take on alternative-pop star Phia, after hearing her new single “Do You Ever?” you won’t be able to get it out of your head.

Otherwise known as Sophia Exiner, Phia is an Australian-born, Berlin-based artist who creates arresting, hypnotic pop music that is just plain fun. With the unusual but artful use of the african instrument kalimba channeled through her loop-pedal, she adds beatboxing and her vocals to create a captivating experience.

The much anticipated track from her debut album which is due out in 2014 has been shaped by collaborator synth-pop producer Mez Medallion, and perfectly captures the explosive and arresting solo live show that has fast gained her a reputation around Europe.

A classically trained pianist, it was a twist of fate that led to Phia first picking up her now trademark kalimba and she hasn’t looked back. The simplicity and beauty of this wooden instrument coupled with the infinite possibilities of the loop pedal sparked a love that completely liberated her, both musically and physically.

She relocated to Berlin and immersed herself in the burgeoning DIY/folk/electronic music scene. Using her new home as a base, she has performed over 100 shows around Europe, from major festivals to supporting Stealing Sheep (UK), Denis Jones (UK), Lights (CAN), Yukon Blonde (CAN), Husky (AUS) and this year securing a slot at Germany’s Fusion Festival.
