65daysofstatic Australian Tour 2013 – Supports Announced!

One of the world’s most popular instrumental groups, 65DAYSOFSTATIC, have announced their first ever visit to Australia, performing headline shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth as well as this year’s Peat’s Ridge Festival. The tour follows the recent announcement of the release of their back catalogue in Australia, beginning with their latest ‘We Were Exploding Anyway / Heavy Sky’ featuring Robert Smith (The Cure), followed by deluxe editions of their first 3 albums.

Formed in 2001 in Sheffield, 65daysofstatic quickly established themselves as one of the most influential post-rock exponents in the UK. Whilst their early EPs showed a band dabbling in electronica and dance-rock, the band was equally at home playing epic instrumentals and math-rock. The success of their 2004 debut LP The Fall Of Math and the follow up One Time For All Time earned the band a personal invitation to support The Cure on their 2007/08 arena tour around the world.

Spencer P Jones and The Nothing Butts Australian Tour – December 2012

“On the group’s self-titled debut, the best of both bands can be heard: smart lyricism, enviable energy, finely tuned ears for melody and fantastic guitar sounds…. Not a second is wasted: at 39 minutes, the album feels tantalisingly brief and demands repeated listens. This is an absorbing and cathartic collection of songs performed by four accomplished musicians. Not to be missed.”
The Australian 4.5 Stars

It’s a group made in rock’n’roll heaven: Spencer P Jones, the redoubtable, life-hardened troubadour, and former member of The Johnnys, the Beasts of Bourbon and a host of other outfits; James Baker, Painkiller, original Scientist, Le Hoodoo Guru, Dubrovnik and Jones’ contemporary in the infamous Axeman’s Jazz line-up of the Beasts; and one half of The Drones, Gareth Liddiard, songwriter, guitarist, modern-day folk-punk poet and enigmatic bassist Fiona Kitschin.

Single Review: Nantes – “Drones”

Review by Helen Brown
Understated guitars and synth coupled with perfectly weighted vocals and harmonies make ‘Drones’ a solid third single from Sydney-based Nantes, and is an advanced taste of their debut album due in 2013.

First single ‘Fly’ launched Nantes from the obscurity of the masses of new artists on Triple J Unearthed to become part of the regular rotation of tracks on the airwaves in 2011, as did their second single ‘Satisfy’ earlier this year.

Album Review: Heroes For Hire – “No Apologies”

Review by Sibel Kutlucan
Heroes For Hire have delivered again with a third full length album, No Apologies, which holds its ground as a great pop punk album.

No Apologies is enthralling and contagious, and is bound to appeal to many. Though a little bias, having liked most of Heroes For Hire’s music previously, it’s great to have a fantastic pop punk band representing Australia, and No Apologies has delivered such a fantastic pop punk album to make us proud.

Album Review: Punk Goes Pop 5

Review by Sibel Kutlucan
Whilst many have argued about labels and band choices for the covers, Fearless Records has delivered another popular album in their Punk Goes Pop series. Released this month, Punk Goes Pop has delivered more interesting covers of hit songs such as Carly Rae Jepson’s “Call Me Maybe” and Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend”.

Punk Goes Pop is a fun, light-hearted listen that promises some infectious beats, that whilst isn’t for everyone, still delivers some unique covers. This is one of those albums that will have varying views and opinions, some wondering whether the bands and artists are typically ‘punk’ or ‘pop’, however personally I thought some songs were better than others.
