Album Review: Jericco – “Beautiful in Danger”

Review by JOSE EDUARDO CRUZ
Debut albums are always difficult to execute for they lay out the musical platform for all aspiring bands and send out a clear statement of what the band is about. Whilst an average debut may not necessarily mean the end of a band, it can set their progress backwards. As a debut album Beautiful in Danger does not set Jericco back at all. In fact it does the complete opposite. Jericco fits quite nicely into the Australian progressive rock genre that has been pioneered by a handful of other bands. This debut cements their place amongst those bands and begins the slow process of becoming a top Australian band. The album sounds simple enough, but the devil is in the detail. Critical examination of every track reveals that simplicity is a difficult process to accomplish. Heavy drum sections coupled with bass lines that hook listeners achieve the desired outcome of getting everyone dancing.

Single Review: San Lazaro – “Dilo”

Review by JOSE EDUARDO CRUZ
Australian Latin band San Lazaro return with a brand new single DILO. After conquering Australia’s premier Latin event Clave Contra Clave in 2012 San Lazaro has capitalised on their success and released a killer track to cement themselves as Australia’s best original Latin band. DILO is the pilot track for their upcoming EP and if this is anything to go by the new material is set to turn the dance floor on fire. DILO translates as “Say it” or “Tell it” and the theme through the song is for people to say to the world or tell the world who they are without fear. The lyrics explain that the media and various other external things place people into neat boxes and DILO exclaims that we must express ourselves by using music, movement and anything that allows us to reclaim our lives.

EP Review: Born Lion – “Born Lion”

Review by JOSE EDUARDO CRUZ
Although the individual members of this outfit have previous experience in the music scene, Born Lion have a short history as a musical project. The first three tracks of this release are punchy, punk, danceable and aggressive. The last two tracks contrast with the first three to the extent that a question of musical direction needs to be asked. What is Born Lion trying to achieve through this self-titled release? If it is a matter of getting their material out and listened to, then this is a great release. The EP is raw and filled with incredible talent that simply needs to be refined. This EP is a demonstration of what Born Lion will become and what they have to offer as an outfit.

Live Review: The Black Angels + The Laurels + The Murlocs @ The Palace Theatre, Melbourne – 14th June 2013

Review and photos by Carl Dziunka
Entering the Palace Theatre for what promised to be a very entertaining night of psych/rock music was at first glance pretty disappointing. The staff of The Palace actually outnumbered the patrons for tonight’s show even though The Murlocs were just about to take to the stage.

The Murlocs, who hail from Geelong, came on stage and started their set with full ferocity which kept up the same tempo all the way through. The lead singer, Ambrose Kenny Smith, who is also a virtuoso on harmonica, and also a member of the group King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, started playing a raw intro on harmonica that must have served as a signal to all the psych rockers in Melbourne. A stream of people started coming through the door and the place started filling steadily to hear the R ‘n’ B infused rhythms emanating across the atmosphere. Just as the groove was starting to set in, The Murlocs set was coming to an end which seems way too soon. They had put the first dint in a great line up that seemed perfectly matched to each other and the next band was ready to up the ante.
