“The Hendrix of the Sahara” – ALL MUSIC GUIDE
“Vieux Farka Toure’s group is the best fucking rock band in the world” – DON WAS (Producer: Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan)
“Mali has a new guitar God, and his name is Vieux Farka Touré ” – FADER
Vieux Farka Touré (pronounced Vyuh Farka Tawray) was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré, who died in 2006. Ali Farka Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens, he declared that he also wanted to be a musician. His father disapproved due to the pressures he had experienced as a musician. Rather, he wanted Vieux to become a soldier. But with help from family friend the kora maestro Toumani Diabaté, Vieux eventually convinced his father to give him his blessing to become a musician shortly before Ali passed.

Flogging Molly + The Lawrence Arms + Lucero – Brisbane & Melbourne Sidewaves announced!
They infuse punk rock with Celtic instruments—violin, mandolin and the accordion—and they merge blues progressions with grinding guitars and traditional Irish music. FLOGGING MOLLY’s fans FLOGGING MOLLY have always defied categorisation. The infectious originality of their songs is a badge of honour and key to the band’s creativity, their urgency. have always appreciated the social and political awareness driving the music.
FLOGGING MOLLY have never conformed to industry tastes; they’ve always been the outcasts who put their fans before commercial success, and they’ve always put their music before marketability. The rewards of such independence and integrity are undeniable on their latest album, ‘Speed of Darkness’. The album, like FLOGGING MOLLY itself, is a testament to youth and resilience, to growing old and the wisdom of scars, and yet for all of the record’s darkness and the speed with which it descends, the ultimate theme is one of light: we can persevere. We must and we will persevere. “Diehard fans might miss Flogging Molly’s manic moments, but Darkness’ lyrical depth–and sonic diversity–are incredibly rewarding.” – Rock Sound

Live Review: 65daysofstatic + sleepmakeswaves @ The Corner Hotel, Melbourne – 4 January 2013
Review by Billy Geary
As is the case with many bands that are somewhat lesser known, despite being critically acclaimed and possessing a stellar live sound, British four piece 65daysofstatic have taken quite a while to finally make it down under. After over ten years together, the band, with the help of the increasingly impressive Birds Robe record label, it was finally Australia’s turn to experience the quartet in the flesh.
Fresh from a huge 2012, including an ARIA award nomination, Sydney’s sleepmakeswaves were tasked with the role of main support for the entire tour. The quartet has, over the last few years, grown their fan base quite significantly and it showed in the sheer volume of the crowd’s cheers on Friday night as the band wandered on stage. The highlights of the set were opener ‘To You They Are Birds…’ and ‘We Sing The Body Electric,’ displaying exactly why they are considered one of Australia’s best young bands. To the delight of many, the band also showcased a couple of new tracks in ‘Avalanches’ and ‘Freshmaker.’ The former was particularly impressive, being slighter faster paced compared to most sleepmakeswaves tracks whilst still retaining their original sound.
