Newcastle’s Where the Devil is back with a vengeance on single number six, ‘Beaten Down Broken Crown’. The chameleonic Aussie five-piece has enjoyed widespread praise for its efforts straddling numerous metal sub-genres and its newest single and frenetic new music video is set to turn things up to 11.

Just like each single before it, ‘Beaten Down Broken Crown’ represents a band that is almost impossible to pigeonhole into one segment of the metal puzzle. Taking another stylistic turn, yet somehow still sounding like Where the Devil, the track also features a cameo by long-time friend Jeremy Dickson of Jadick6 in the track’s brooding mid-tempo middle.

Vocalist Ben Pennifold says, “When I first heard the riffs for this track my mind went immediately to Pantera’s ‘The Great Southern Trendkill’ opening scream. The format of the track is still traditional, but it has this midway section that’s a slow trudge through the sincerest strain of hate and of overcoming adversity. The story behind the lyrics can be boiled down to the outside looking in, reflecting, and noting what has worked and what needs to be improved.”

2022 is finally looking like the time for the band to lay waste to stages around the country, with a run of shows already booked for April, including a spot in the NSW heat of the Wacken Metal Battle on April 17 in Sydney. Guitarist ‘Remi’ Wilson says, “We’re just stoked to make the cut from what we were told was more than 100 entries state-wide. Whether we win or we don’t, it’ll be a great show for us.”

Before that, WTD will support Lycanthrope and Nicolas Cage Fighter at Crowbar, Sydney on April 15 which will also serve as the official launch of their single and video.

If that’s not enough, Where the Devil is already in possession of boxes of its debut EP that will be launched in late May. More info on this to follow.
