Though Christopher Doyle is an internationally recognised and awarded designer – in 2009 he was named one of InDesign Magazine’s Top Ten Faces and Forces Of Design – fans of Sydney band The Jezabels will know him simply as the man responsible for the band’s stunning CD artwork, images of which will be on display at Mart Gallery this December.

“Fans and critics alike are always commenting on how beautiful our covers are. We agree and are so thankful that our relationship with Chris came about.” – Sam Lockwood, The Jezabels.

Via his photography and design, Christopher has helped define The Jezabels’ aesthetic from day one, and for the first time ever audiences will have the opportunity to see the images in their original form as large format prints, framed and for sale, along with unreleased artwork and test shots.

“As a designer I find the process of designing for music fairly terrifying,” explains Christopher. “Essentially you are creating art, in response to art. It’s tricky and subjective ground, but thankfully the band have been able to articulate the themes around each release. The challenge for me has always been trying to ensure the imagery and artwork ‘look and feel’ like the music sounds. For me, there is drama and intensity, as well as darkness and lightness, to the band’s sound, and this is what I always attempt to visualise.”

“Chris is so important to us,” adds The Jezabels’ guitarist Sam Lockwood. “With our releases, he has repeatedly been able to understand the underlying message of our music, as well as our somewhat strange musical aesthetic. He has time and time again come up with beautiful, surreal, sublime and uncanny visual translations of the music we make. We talk about this between ourselves in the band – the way that Chris has helped us define what we do.”

>From their debut EP, The Man Is Dead, to the recently released full-length record Prisoner, The Jezabels have become one of Australia’s most in-demand bands. Now, thanks to this exhibition, fans will be able to get closer to The Jezabels and, via the limited edition prints that are for sale, own a piece of the band’s history.
