Take Five With… Melinda Buttle

The Paddo Tavern is gearing up for a big one this Wednesday night, and no, it’s not a State of Origin party, it’s Ladies Comedy Night! Featuring the hilarious Kat Davidson, Fiona McGary and Melinda Buttle, it’s set to be a cracking night and the perfect antidote to Maroons fever.

To give us the lowdown, Brisbane columnist, radio personality and the best stand-up comic in a floral cardi you’ll ever see, Mel Buttle took a break from her “cult-hit twitter feed” to talk to Life Music Media.

Tell us a bit about Ladies Comedy Night.
It’s super fun! It’s just like a chocolate milkshake only crunchy.

Describe your fellow comedians Fiona McGary and Kat Davidson.
Both are curly haired vixens of comedy with years of experience, from who I’ve learned much. Fiona has a very dry, Kitty Flangan like style whereas Kat is more of an animated storyteller.

What is it like performing at The Sit Down Comedy Club?
It’s a lovely venue, and they give me free Fanta. Free!

:: Who is your favourite comedian? ::
Judith Lucy, and it’s not just because we have the same hair. Judith has been my favourite since I was 8.

:: Where do you find inspiration? ::
Whenever I hang out with old people, they have the best stories. Old people say funny words like Bonza, Grouse and Manageress.

:: What is your favourite type of heckler? ::
I hate hecklers, they ruin the show. Don’t heckler, ever. I mean it.

:: What is the most memorable production or performance you have seen?::
I saw 50 Cent in concert in Perth, it was very memorable, for all the wrong reasons. I caught a singlet he threw into the crowd, but it was snatched off me by actual fans.

:: Something that really inspired you. ::
Living with Josh Thomas a few years ago, was a very inspirational time, he mentored me in comedy and life, before I met Josh I’d never eaten eggplant.

:: Name a comic that you’d really love to support or tour with ::
Maria Bamford. She’s an American comedian, I think she’s the best comedian in the world at the moment.

:: Favourite recording artist? ::
The Grates’ they’re a really excellent Brisbane band, I love them very hard.

:: Favourite album? ::
Gravity Won’t Get You High by The Grates

:: Favourite food? ::
Custard.

:: Favourite drink? ::
Gin and Tonic

:: Favourite place? ::
Grub Street Café in Gaythorne, they do great coffee.

:: Favourite season? ::
Autumn.

:: Recommend a book ::
The Family Law, it’s a very funny book, by Brisbane author Benjamin Law

:: Recommend a film ::
Bridesmaids

:: Words of wisdom ::
‘I don’t believe in failure. It is not failure if you enjoyed the process.’
Oprah Winfrey

What’s next for Melinda Buttle?
I’m about to start a new segment on Triple J Brekkie with Tom and Alex 8.30am every Thursday. I’m writing columns for the Courier Mail and I’m hoping to eat a brownie soon.

Ladies Comedy Night at the Sit Down Comedy Club this Wednesday 29 June 2011.
