Album Review : AARON KEYLOCK – Cut Against The Grain

Review by Peter Coates
AARON KEYLOCK
From the opening riff of All The Right Moves it appears that the UK has produced another stunning young talent in Aaron Keylock, able to combine the truly British classic 60’s and 70’s blues rock sound of Free and the Clapton, Beck, Page-era guitarists, with a modern American southern rock twist! Hints of early Black Keys or White Stripes in the stripped-down riff and drum lines combine with a greater variety of guitar sounds and raw vocals.

Steel Panther at Metro City, Perth - June 23, 2016 Photographer: Peter Coates
The somewhat dated, chrome steel and neon lit Metro City seemed a perfect location for the flashy, trashy, lewd and crude beast of risqué cabaret and vaudeville that is a Steel Panther show, and with the packed house still streaming through the doors, southern US rockers Black Stone Cherry hit the stage and crash into Me and Mary Jane. Definitely Southern, and certainly bluesy, but with some alt-metal nuances, this is a band I have been a fan of for years, and they never fail to deliver a powerful live show.

Ragdoll is a three-piece melodic rock band from Perth who has been around for several years, putting out a number of EPs and one full-length collection of remixes and live tracks which received limited exposure in Australia, and even less outside Perth, although they have been regular visitors to the USA touring extensively, and playing the Rocklahoma festival more than once.

Live Review : Thirsty Merc + Tequila Mockingbyrd at Melbourne Public, Melbourne – April 20, 2016

Thirsty Merc Melbourne Public 200416 379
Thirsty Merc are out on the road doing a string of dates under the ‘Back to the Grind’ banner, 6 months after the car crash which tragically resulted in the death of stage manager Shane Cooper, and put drummer Mick Skelton in hospital in a coma. Mick happily recovered from that and is back in the band, however decided to miss this date, to be replaced by Dragon skinsman Pete Drummond.
