Billed by organisers as the perfect way to cap off New Year’s celebrations, Brisbane’s Sunset Sounds has become renowned for its impeccable line-ups and alluring Botanical Gardens setting. With headline act Interpol leading the charge of an impressively diverse set of artists, the 2011 festival kicked off on the muggy afternoon of Wednesday January 5th.
After a short delay at the gate (a mix-up with letting the media in probably not the kind of press that organisers had hoped for) I head straight for the River Stage to catch the first winners of the festival’s ‘Sponsor the Band’ competition Ball Park Music. Halfway through their set and the local six-piece has drawn a small but decent crowd for early in the afternoon, mixing originals and covers and making big sound for a group of not so big kids. Ending with ‘iFly’, their most well known track, the swelling audience joins in with a rousing chorus and the day is kicked off to a glorious start.

From January 14th – February 4th, Tribal Theatre will present four special Friday late-night screenings of the 2003 cult film The Room.
Dubbed ‘the Citizen Kane of bad movies’, Tommy Wiseau’s so-bad-it’s-good film will be screened on 35mm in all its glory. A piece of cinema so awful it has become a cult phenomenon and an outrageous movie-going experience. Audiences around the world have embraced Wiseau’s film, dressing up as their favorite characters, throwing plastic spoons at the screen, tossing footballs to each other, and yelling insulting comments about the film’s terrible quality. |
The Room is a truly unforgettable film with glaring plot holes, strange editing and a bizarre lead performance from Tommy Wiseau himself.
Set in San Francisco, The Room is a melodramatic but unintentionally hilarious tale of a love triangle involving Johnny, his friend Mark, and Johnny’s fiancée Lisa – who is sleeping with both men…
The Room drew packed audiences when screened recently as part of Brisbane International Film Festival and Tribal Theatre is pleased to bring back the film for four special screenings at 10pm.

It’s Scratch Perry lacing up his chucks and eating a burrito con pollo with lyrics from a Morrissey song swimming in his brain. Tape echoes, blue horns and skittering drums. |
