ARIA Chart News, w/c 17 August 2009

David Guetta achieves his first Australian No.1 single this week with “Sexy Bitch” (featuring Akon), knocking The Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling” off the top of the ARIA Singles Chart after a record-breaking seven week stretch. Guetta appears twice in this week’s top 10, with his former #6 single “When Love Takes Over” (feat. Kelly Rowland) jumping four spots to #7. It’s Akon’s second number one single following “Lonely”, which spent three non-consecutive weeks at the top in 2005. “Sexy Bitch” also takes out the No.1 spot on the ARIA Digital Track Chart this week.

Review: Splendour In The Grass 2009 – Day 2

By: Elize Strydom

Day two! I arrive at the site to find it virtually deserted. I’m here early for good reason. I’ve been hanging out to catch Townsville collective The Middle East and they’re first up on the GW McLennan stage.

Their tunes The Darkest Side and Blood have been getting considerable airplay on triple j and a friend of the band handed me a copy of their record but I’ve been told they MUST be seen live. Five guys and one girl walk on stage and take their places behind various instruments but they won’t be there long. Throughout the set each member will put down his guitar and take up a trumpet, stop tinkling the ivories in favour of the flute, or accordion, or tambourine and on it goes. Rohin Jones takes the role as front man for much of the set. He’s smiley and gracious and thanks the audience for waking up. One minute the sound is gentle, spacious and delicate the next it’s raucous, crashing and emotive. Bree’s sweet vocals weave in and out of the softer tunes and I’m reminded of Bright Eyes during their more country rock moments. As I watch them I picture myself writing this review and just know I won’t do the Middle East justice. I haven’t. See them for yourself, post haste!

ARIA Chart News, w/c 29 June 2009

This week sees the domination of The Black Eyed Peas continue, as they break Madonna’s 1985 record to become the first act in twenty four years to replace themselves at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart. “I Gotta Feeling” becomes the group’s sixth number one single, putting them on equal footing with Eminem and Kylie Minogue, with only Delta Goodrem earning more No. 1’s (8) this decade. “Boom Boom Pow” drops to #2 after having spent a huge six weeks at the top.

Hilltop Hoods continue to hold strong at #1 on the ARIA Album Chart with their album “State Of The Art”, becoming the first Australian artist to spend multiple weeks at number one since Silverchair’s “Young Modern” in 2007. They have gone one better than their 2006 debut album “The Hard Road”, which spent one week in the number one position.
