Kicking off the first live show in a string of tours for The Butterfly Effects “Final Conversation tour”, a band of a smaller stature, not lacking in rock adjure, show Brisbane they can do it, and do it well. Interview with singer songwriter Clare Bowditch

Interview: Elize Strydom

Clare BowditchThe girl can’t help it. She’s surprised and excited and confused. She’s asking questions, making plans and speaking out. Clare Bowditch is just being Clare Bowditch.

Elize Strydom catches the fire.

“I really love the idea of his stories living on. It’s great to be able to do a tribute with someone who is very much alive and there! You see what’s happening in the culture at the moment with Michael Jackson – I think that’s too late to celebrate someone. My theory is if you love someone, do your best to celebrate them while they’re alive and can enjoy it.”

Clare Bowditch is talking about legendary Indigenous singer/songwriter/storyteller Kev Carmody. And she wants you to know about it. On August 1st Bowditch will take to the stage with a swag of other artists including Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, John Butler, Bernard Fanning and the Drones for Cannot Buy My Soul – a tribute to Carmody and the culmination of the Queensland Music Festival.

THE DEER REPUBLIC ARE CROWNED THE UNCHARTED WINNERS!

The competition was fierce at the Tooheys Extra Dry uncharTED Grand Final for competition 1, 2009. Three of Australia’s top emerging bands battled it out for the major prize – a spot on the bill at Splendour In The Grass 2009, plus an artist development package worth $25,000. Nova’s Rosso hosted the event, as the Oxford Art Factory reached full capacity and the crowd were treated to a special performance from Kram.
After astounding live-sets from each finalist, The Deer Republic from Sydney came out on top and was crowned the uncharTED winner, just beating Hot Little Hands and Foxx On Fire in the industry and public votes. Having only been together a couple of years, The Deer Republic captivated the audience with their melodic indie-rock and catchy hooks. It seems there’s no stopping this Sydney outfit, as they get ready to play one of Australia’s best festivals, Splendour In The Grass.

Nick Andrijic of The Deer Republic describes their win “Phenomenal; ecstasy; fantastic! I’m not just saying this because we’re gracious winners; the other two bands that played tonight are fantastic… It means the world to us to play at Splendour… the fact that we’re going to be sharing the stage with some of them [our favourite bands], it’s indescribable at the moment, I don’t think it’s going to hit me for a couple of days… we’re looking forward to it.”

uncharTED competition 1 attracted more than 2,300 entrants this year, and an esteemed panel of industry experts and an A&R team selected the Top 50 artists in Round 1. Round 2 saw the unveiling of the Top 10 semi-finalists, made up of four media picks and the 6 publicly voted bands. Round 3 announced Foxx On Fire, Hot Little Hands and The Deer Republic as the Top 3 finalists – and after 10 weeks of vigorous voting, the competition ended with a bang at last night’s Grand Final, with The Deer Republic leaving with the major prize!

Tooheys Extra Dry uncharTED competition 2, 2009 is now open. If you’re a solo artist or in a band looking to make it big, head to www.uncharted.com.au to register. You could be on your way to becoming Australia’s next big thing!

Live Review: True Live + The Kidney Thieves @ The Zoo, Brisbane 4 July 2009

True Live @ The Zoo , Brisbane 4 July 2009
Supported by: The Kidney Thieves.
Author: Jose Eduardo Cruz

True Live   Saturday was a very cold and windy night in Brisbane, which would keep many a punter at home. Being Brisbane anything short of perfect weather keeps most concert goers away from live venues. Keeping this in mind, the attendance level was a testament to the calibre of performance we were about to witness.

Supporting act, The Kidney Thieves are definitely not shy or suffer from stage fright. These guys have been around for a while now and have developed a nice following in their home town. Charismatic or maybe a bit insane is how you would

describe their front man, Jack Muzak. You can’t call these guys a warm up band; they are more like a set fire to the stage band and hope the next band can still use it. Their sound takes me back to a Faith No More era, where sounds and styles blended. Sex Panther an 8 minute epic, riddled with so many time changes that you forget which song it is, illustrated this bands wild nature. The Kidney Thieves equal fun.

Medieval Battle
Saturday 11th July and Sunday 12th July mark the 20th Anniversary of the Abbey Medieval Festival.

The Abbey Medieval Festival offers an experience unlike any other. The colour, pageantry and atmosphere and the authenticity of performers will transport visitors back in time in this unique week of festival activities. Visitors will thrill to the excitement and skill of the Joust, the roar of knights in battle and be entertained by the beautiful Middle-eastern dancers, drama, music and the markets. They may also indulge their medieval taste buds and feast on tantalizing food at the Medieval Banquet or dance their way into the starry night at the Masque Ball.

This year the Jousting Spectacular will be more thrilling and competitive than ever before! The Joust is one of the festivals most popular spectacles. It is now ticketed to guarantee seating or standing space to allow as many people as possible to clearly see the event. There will be three tilts each day to maximise the opportunity for visitors to enjoy this dangerous and yet exciting event.

Interview: KRAM – Making Music and Loving It!

KRAMTell us how Kram came about?

KRAM: Mark spelt backwards invented by an old mate while we watching a Leyland Brothers movie in the local hall.

What have been the highlights and advantages since becoming a solo artist?

KRAM: It’s very liberating to make a record where you play all the instruments yourself, like a massive bedroom 4-track session. I enjoyed doing that with Andy, recording everything! I will definitely make more records like that in the future. If you have the idea in your head, you can just go in and play it without having to think about the live thing at all.

… and how does this compare to Spiderbait?

Sunday Selection: Ellington : 5th July 2009

LifeMusicMedia Sunday Selection is your weekly view to Queensland Artists

Ellington    After their debut EP The Joy We Keep In earned them some dedicated fans, Ellington worked relentlessly to start recording a batch of new songs they could develop even further – and introduce to a wider audience. Enlisting the help of producer Matt Malpass (Copeland, Lydia) and some special guest stars (Matthew Thiessen (Relient K), Jeff Turner (Say Anything) and Leighton Antelman (Lydia)), the six-track record sounds phenomenal for a duo self-releasing it. Jake Bosci’s warm and inviting vocals barely register a whisper above the atmospheric, dream-like guitar work, moving away from the meloncholic self-loathing most indie-pop bands center on, instead focusing on love and all the senses it manipulates with its gentle embrace. “She said it’s not hard to fall in love / The hardest part is proving that love is what you wanted / and what you’ll need for the rest of your life,” sings Bosci on “Wide Awake and Smiling,” glimmering with sentiment and optimism.
