SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2011 WRAP UP!

Splendour In The Grass festival wrapped up at Woodfordia last night after three glorious sundrenched days of music, arts, discussion and sweet times shared with old and new friends.

Splendour took the music to the people for the 11th time, with the 30,000 strong crowd taking in over 90 of the hottest acts that Australia and the world has to offer.

Friday night headliner Kanye West took Splendour’s Ampitheatre crowd to “a whole other level” with a monster set that ran for 90 minutes and included over 20 ballet dancers, pyrotechnics and an absolute killer performance by the man himself.

With one of the hottest tracks of the moment Gotye delighted the GW McLennan audience when he invited Kimbra on stage to perform “Somebody That I Used To Know” during his set.

On Saturday The Mars Volta, Foster The People and Pnau were the talk of the festival for their commanding sets and huge audiences.

Sunday highlights included Kaiser Chiefs, Devendra Banhart and Pulp. Coldplay then closed Splendour with one monumental sing a long as they pumped out hit after hit to a packed Ampitheatre crowd.

In addition to the mammoth music line-up, Splendour In The Grass 2011 offered punters a diversity of festival distractions. On Friday The Splendour Forum hosted the much talked about panel “Big Brother V Little Brother” with a dedicated video message from Julian Assange.

“This generation is burning the mass media to the ground. We’re reclaiming our rights to old history. We are ripping open secret archives from Washington to Cairo. We are reclaiming our rights to share ourselves and our times with each other, to be the agents and writers of our own history. We don’t know yet exactly where we are but we can see where we’re going.”

Other destination spaces such as the Tipi Forest, Global Village, Very Small Mall, Splendour Day Spa, Smirnoff Cocktail Bar, La Cantina Mexicana and the Jager Hunting Lodge offered Splendour goers a range of places to explore.

The new car pass system worked a treat and punters entered and excited the site with relative ease.

With Queensland’s largest provider of first aid services, Emergency First Aid Services, on board to provide around the clock care for patrons, Stephen Barnes (Emergency First Aid Services Representative) said, “I would like to commend the crowd on their responsible approach to footwear, sunscreen and hydration which overall resulted in a 50% reduction in presentations. You looked after yourselves and each other. Good work!”

Most treatments were for minor complaints. A team of doctors, registered nurses and paramedics were on hand to care for a number of medical conditions that presented throughout the weekend, and Emergency First Aid Services liaised with the Ambulance Service of QLD for patients who required further medical treatment.

Co-producer Jessica Ducrou said “This year we put together one of the most adventurous, diverse and controversial line-ups of Splendour’s history. Thanks to all of you who came along and enjoyed it with us! See you next year!”
