Richard Clapton takes us to The House of Orange – New Album out 8 April 2016

Richard Clapton is one of Australia’s foremost singer/songwriters and has paved the way for three generations of songwriters to write about the experience of being Australian.

Songs like Girls on the Avenue, I Am an Island, Deep Water, Capricorn Dancer and The Best Years of Our Lives are absolute classics and are part of Australia’s cultural history.

In 2015, Richard was invited to join his longtime friend and producer Mark Moffatt in Nashville to record a new album, which became The House of Orange, his 20th album set for release on Friday, 8 April 2016 (Please click here to request a review copy).

Moffatt, an expat originally from Brisbane who moved to Nashville over 20 years ago, worked with Richard on early albums when they were both linked via Australia’s foremost indie label at the time, Festival Records. After staying in touch in the ensuing years, Moffatt urged Richard to head over and make an album that focused on Clapton’s fine songwriting skills as well as tapping into the musical pedigree of the Nashville ‘Americana’ scene that has become so dominant there. Moffatt is on the board of the Americana Music Association and is one of the programmers of the yearly Americana Festival.

Richard received fantastic support from his fans through a crowdfunding campaign to raise the funds necessary to enable him to record in Nashville. After two solid months working on the album in the US, The House of Orange is set for release on Friday, 8 April 2016 through MGM Distribution.

The first single from The House of Orange, Something About You, is classic Clapton. Richard explained, “I wrote this song just jamming along by myself. It’s just a no–brainer, a fun rocker that is just that – fun!”

The album includes a range of Clapton songs. Some will be familiar – like Hearts on the Nightline – all produced and handpicked by Moffatt. Each track has a fresh and energised sound resulting from sessions utilising the skills of gun players including Dan Dugmore (Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks and Linda Ronstadt), David Labruyere (John Mayer) and some of Nashville’s finest musicians.

One of the standout new songs, Carry Me Home, is one Richard collaborated on with his daughter Saskia – a musician currently living in Liverpool UK.

Many of the songs on the album are topical and relate directly to the socio – political landscape of our times. Moffatt and Clapton both felt this to be appropriate for an album recorded in 2016, but there is also a good balance of Richard’s trademark songs from the heart.

After all these years Clapton is still making music from the heart and may well have recorded his finest album yet.
