Q&A with Eloise Mitchell – Wayward Smith

Q&A with Eloise Mitchell of Brisbane alternate rock/pop band, Wayward Smith.

:: What track changed your life ::
I find it really hard to put it down to one track. I feel like there are certain points that I get to in my life where a song really connects with me and for the next 2 months I can’t live without it but then as I grow it becomes a different song. There is one song I remember really liking though, it was called Those Were The Days – Mary Hopkins. I can’t imagine what I put my family through listening to that song over and over again.

:: What is your favourite Album ::
It depends on my mood, if I feel like having a ridiculous dance party I usually turn to the old school boy bands, Backstreet Boys and Five. When I feel like trying my hand at being a diva I pull out Beyonce’s album Sasha Fierce and when I’m driving I usually turn to Birds of Tokyo or Coldplay. I won’t settle for one. None of that stuck on a desert island business.

:: Name a band or artist we should checkout ::
Asta, I was obsessed with her music a little while ago. I think her music is brilliant and it would be great to see her live or even collaborate with her.

:: Favourite Quote ::
You only get out what you put in. I often remind myself of that fact.

:: When on tour, you can’t live without ::
A cup of tea and some sunshine.

:: When you think of Australia, you think ::
I’m lucky enough to call it home.

:: Worst thing to happen to music is ::
Autotune. There are a few too many musicians that can’t pull off their shows live without it.

:: Best thing about the current music industry ::
Autotune… just kidding. I love that there are a lot of independent acts coming through the ranks in the music industry and that the movement of the industry towards a more independently supported basis is happening. There are so many creative and brilliant artists that are taking advantage of this.

:: Biggest influence ::
My influences are based on who I see as being a good vocalist which forces me strive to work harder on my own vocals. I would probably say my first influence was Tina Arena but now I use Beyonce for that motivation.

:: Childhood hero ::
Scrappy Doo. That guy was a real pocket rocket and I was always the smallest in primary school, what better hero could you want?

:: When you were younger you wanted to be ::
It was either a singer or a vet. I decided early on that I wouldn’t be able to put an animal down so I opted for singing instead.

:: Last album bought ::
The Chicago soundtrack.

:: First album you ever bought ::
Britney Spears – …Baby One More Time for $22. I got back into the car with my family after I had bought it and when I tried to put it on I was vetoed by everyone. I had barely finished my sentence.

:: First concert you went to ::
Regina Spektor at The Tivoli

:: Last concert you went to ::
Birds of Tokyo at the Tivoli for their March Fires tour

:: Favourite current band ::
The Wombats

:: Favourite drink ::
Strawberry Milk, something my inner child never let go of.

:: Favourite book ::
Geisha of Gion

:: Favourite actor ::
Dustin Hoffman

:: Favourite website ::

:: The best boredom buster is ::
Bike riding

:: The best film you ever saw was ::
Jumanji

:: Your ultimate snack is ::
Jelly!

:: The first thing you do when you wake up is ::
Is think about how many hours earlier I should have gone to bed than I did

:: Best piece of advice you’ve received ::
Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da life goes on.

:: Your biggest aspirations ::
I dream of main stages, huge audiences, big sounds and dancing like a maniac.

:: Best/worst gift you’ve ever given/received ::
My parents flew me down to Melbourne to see my twin sister who I hadn’t seen for around 8 months. I had a fantastic weekend and it wasn’t even my birthday.
