Surfest culminated on Sunday with the women’s and mens final. Record crowds swarmed to Merewether beach to see top seeds Sally Fitzgibbon and Matt Wilkinson take out top honors in up to six foot waves. A humble yet jubilant Fitzgibbon was crowned winner of the Taggart Women’s Pro. The Runner up was six time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore. Men’s No.1 Seed Wilkinson came up against young Italian sensation Leonardo Fioravanti in the Final. Central Coast based Wilkinson was crowned the eventual winner. Overall a very positive boost for Newcastle with record crowds.
