Drawing from the NGV ’s Collection of Australian Fashion and Textiles, Australian Made: 100 Years of Fashion will look at the rise fashion in Australia from the 1850s to 1950s. The exhibition will include some rare early examples of labelled garments from the mid 19th century and a range of dresses, tailored items and accessories that were made and retailed in Australia during this period.
Fashion has played a vital role in Australia since first European settlement. Whether reflecting status and position in a newly formed society, or exhibiting new found wealth and flamboyance, the language of fashion was of the utmost importance for the burgeoning Australian society. |

Thinking about Cairns, music is rarely the first thing that comes to mind. And when the brain cells do get around to firing in the melodic direction, the image drawn most frequently is that of cover bands playing ‘Down Under’ to hopelessly intoxicated backpackers. So it’s good to know that there are original, independent muso’s inhabiting the tourist Mecca, artists who can battle the salty humidity and lure of cheap pink drinks to produce a unique contribution to the Australian music scene.
The artists in question are known as The Medics, a four-piece emotive indie outfit with an arrangement of electric and |

The Chemical Brothers – New Album ‘Further’ Released 4 June 2010
It starts with what sounds like an alien morse code transmission; Earth bound signals bouncing off the side of orbiting space debris. Snatches of voices found out in the ether cut through the machine fog, drifting across burbling analogue equipment lovingly kept working long after supposed sell-by date. By the time the click and thump of snare and bass drum arrive, the sounds are all-encompassing, swirling around you with dizzying, disorientating effect. Noises come untethered by constraints of volume, seemingly leaping from the speakers with a life of their own. For a band used to dealing in psychedelics, this time round The Chemical Brothers have really pushed the proverbial envelope. Following the brilliance of Tones of Town, it appeared Field Music were entering a possibly terminal hiatus due to the Brewis brothers’ aversion to touring and their seemingly disparate musical desires. However, a couple of excellent solo projects in the form of School of Language (David’s baby) and The Week That Was (Peter’s) appear to have not only brought the focus back to Field Music, but also added some excitement to the flagship band. Maybe the critical success of the two side-projects and the removal of tour pressure during this time (which the brothers hate) reinvigorated the old girl – but whatever it was, she’s sounding fantastic. |

Jet Announce Promotional Visit April 13 – 16

As details were announced today that Melbourne’s own JET will join Brisbane’s Powderfinger on their upcoming national ‘Sunsets – The Farewell Tour’ throughout September and October, the million plus album selling rockers will be in Australia for a promotional tour from Tuesday April 13 to Friday April 16. Earlier this week, Jet’s She’s A Genius hit was announced as one of the nominated APRA ‘Song Of The Year’ Awards along with Empire Of The Sun, The Middle East, Temper Trap and others. |
The 2010 winner will be announced at the APRA Awards on Monday 21st June.

CD Review: Cate Le Bon – Me Oh My

Welsh singer songwriter Cate Le Bon’s quiet, haunting tunes featured on her debut album Me Oh My will follow you for a long time after the CD finishes playing. Filled with melancholy lyrics, soft repetitive choruses and a darkly ever present awareness of mortality, this album is about as far away from pop as you could get.
Cate’s claim that she only ever writes songs in the dark is indeed accounted for in the lyrics on Me Oh My. Phrases such as “I fought the night and the night fought me/Knocked on the door and used its key” (Me Oh My), “Eyes so bright they just steal the night” (Eyes So Bright) and “It’s just baby I’m headed for the black” (Sad Sad Feet) pepper the album, which holds a resigned heaviness for its entire length.

Having spent the last three weeks at number two, Lady Gaga’s album “The Fame Monster” takes over the top position on this week’s ARIA Album Chart. The album’s entire eighteen-week chart life has been spent in the top 10. On the ARIA Singles and Digital Track Charts, Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” holds firm for a fourth consecutive week, well on the way to becoming one of this year’s most successful chart toppers. It is the only single in the top 17 of this week’s singles chart that has a physical component.
“I Like That” from Richard Vission & Static Revenger featuring Luciana makes a bold move up the ARIA Singles Chart this week, jumping from 7 to 3 and edging ever closer to top spot. With a visit to our shores scheduled for later this month, Justin Bieber’s “Baby” featuring Ludacris moves up from 11 to 6, and “Nothin’ On You” from B.o.B. (featuring Bruno Mars) hits the top 10, moving up from 14 to 8. Also achieving their first top 10 single result is UK outfit Florence + The Machine, blasting up eight places to #9 this week with their hit single “You’ve Got The Love”. Another artist to visit on a promotional tour recently is US superstar Adam Lambert, who sees his single “Whataya Want From Me” grow week on week – this week he just misses out on an Aussie top 10 result as the single moves up five places to #11. Miley Cyrus also continues her upward trajectory, racing forward nine places to a top 20 result, landing at #19 this week with “When I Look At You”. Top 40 debuts this week are lead by Usher featuring Will.I.Am at #15 with “OMG”, followed by Lady Gaga at #28 with “Alejandro” and The Temper Trap at 32 with “Love Lost”
