Grand Slam champion Serena Williams to make her debut at Brisbane International 2012

Serena Williams will start her 2012 season at the Brisbane International in January 2012.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion and 39 WTA career title holder will join Maria Sharapova, Kim Clijsters and Sam Stosur in what is shaping up to be the strongest women’s event leading up to the Australian Open.

The former No.1 and five-time Australian Open champion is excited to be playing in her first Brisbane International.
“Well, I never played in Brisbane and I have never been to Brisbane [but I have] heard great things about it,” Williams said.

“It is the first tournament there [in Australia] … and it is the big one there this year.
“It is brand new [for me] so all that is going to be really exciting and it will help me with my seeding going into the Australian Open too so that would be good.

“I’m really excited to see everything, like how people are, you know my fans, I have such a great fan base in Australia, it’s my favourite Slam [the Australian Open] to play so I [am] really looking forward to going to Brisbane.”

“This is the ultimate endorsement of the event,” Brisbane International Tournament Director Cameron Pearson said today.

“Serena is arguably one of the best female tennis players in history and the fact that she has chosen to play in Brisbane just demonstrates the reputation the event has built with players on the tour.
“I look forward to welcoming Serena to Brisbane in January.”

“With its world-class facilities, a great playing atmosphere, friendly staff and enthusiastic tennis fans, the event is attracting the world’s best tennis players and Serena’s attendance is just confirmation of this.
“What a line-up we have, with Serena joining Maria Sharapova, Samantha Stosur, Kim Clijsters and Ana Ivanoivic in a star-studded field. Expect some heated battles on the court this coming January.”

Williams has been ranked World No.1 in singles on five separate occasions. She became No.1 for the first time on 8 July 2002 and regained this ranking for the fifth time on 2 November 2009.

The American is considered to be one of the greatest women’s tennis players of all time with 27 Grand Slam titles placing her ninth on the all-time list. She has recorded 13 Grand Slam singles titles, 12 in women’s doubles, and two in mixed doubles.

She is the most recent player, male or female, to have held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously and is only the fifth woman in history to do so.

Williams was also the first woman, along with sister Venus, to hold all four Grand Slam doubles titles simultaneously since Martina Hingis did so in 1998.

Her 13 Grand Slam singles titles puts Williams sixth on the all-time list and ranks her fourth in Grand Slam women’s singles titles won during the Open era, behind Steffi Graf (22 titles) and Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova (18 titles each).

Williams has won more major titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles than any other active player, male or female, and she has won more career prize money than any other female athlete in history, earning just under $35 million.

Queensland Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the 2012 Brisbane International will showcase the brightest stars on the tennis circuit.

“Serena Williams is an absolute powerhouse and her recent form at the US Open is set to excite fans, which will hopefully translate to a full house at the Queensland Tennis Centre,” Mr Reeves said.
“Having stars like Serena at the Brisbane International just a year after the floods demonstrates that Brisbane, and Queensland, is open for business.
“That’s why the Bligh Government, through Events Queensland, supports the Brisbane International. It provides a massive boost to the economy and tourism industry, and highlights our reputation as the Champions State and the Events State as well.”

The Brisbane International commenced in 2009 with world-class talent including Novak Djokovic, Andy Roddick, Robin Soderling, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Justine Henin competing over the past three years.
Prize money for this combined ATP-WTA tour event will increase to USD$1.1million in 2012, a 63 per cent increase, then to USD$1.55 million in 2013.

Brisbane International 2012 series packages and single sessions are on sale now.
Tickets start from as little as $14.90 for ground passes and can be purchased online at www.ticketek.com.au/brisbaneinternational or call 1300 888 104.

Album Review | Every Avenue – Bad Habits

Review – Sibel Kutlucan
Every Avenue have returned with their brand new album, Bad Habits, which packs a punch and will definitely remain on repeat. The quintet hailing from Michigan had a reputation to uphold after the success of Picture Perfect (released 2009) and I was a little anxious to listen to Bad Habits; not wanting to sully their past tracks that I had grown fond of, but at the same time wanting to hear more. In the end I gave it a listen and I was glad I did!

De Ferran – who raced at Surfers Paradise on seven occasions for a best result of fourth in his final appearance – was a Team Penske legend – winning the Champ Car Title for the Champion American team in his first year in 2000, then going back to back in 2001.

His crowning glory though was the 2003 victory in the Indianapolis 500 for The Captain-Roger Penske.

The Devil Wears Prada (USA) ‘Dead Throne’ Australian Tour – October 2011

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA RETURN FOR DEAD THRONE TOUR AUSTRALIA 2011!

The Devil Wears Prada are set to return to Australia this October for a rapid fire run of shows in support of their fourth studio album Dead Throne. Michigan’s metal cross post-hardcore outfit We Came As Romans and local juggernauts Dream On Dreamer will complete this impressive package.

Dead Throne, out September 9th on Roadrunner Records, is hailed as the uncompromising release that will mark the Ohio six-piece turning a corner and taking a confident step to the next level. More aggressive, more emotionally charged and sonically larger than previous releases, Dead Throne is characterised by a more pronounced focus on the band’s unique, punishing dual-vocal assault. The Devil Wears Prada’s evolution musically and unwavering technical proficiency is seemingly effortlessly laid out in the razor-sharp, straight-ahead metal tracks that are utterly brilliant not only in their composition, but also in their flawless delivery. It has not been quiet on the tour front either for The Devil Wears Prada. They have racked up multiple European and UK tours already this year (including a main stage appearance at Download Festival) and notched up a healthy string of US dates, including slaying the main stage on Warped. Witness The Devil Wears Prada‘s renewed conviction when they take to Australian stages once again this October for their biggest Australian headline tour yet.

We Came As Romans made their standout live debut on Australian soil at 2010’s No Sleep Til festivals. In the nine months that have passed the six-piece have been touring tirelessly, building on their already solid fanbase the old fashioned way. Seemingly addicted to the road and stage, the band have only paused long enough to record in brief windows between tours. We Came As Romans returned to Foundation Recording Studio with their longtime friend and producer, Joey Sturgis [Asking Alexandria, Attack Attack!] for their sophomore effort. The new material carries the band’s signature sound of intricate guitar riffs, both mosh-worthy and melodic breakdowns, and the flawless intertwining of dual vocals from David Stephens and Kyle Pavone. Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be is due for release 16 September via UNFD.

It has been a big year already for young Melbourne band Dream On Dreamer, who will round out the Dead Throne Tour bill this October. Having signed to Powerhouse labels UNFD and Rise Records, they recently released their debut album Heartbound worldwide, reaching #38 on the ARIA Charts and getting the band attention from all over the world. These Australian dates come in between a mass worldwide tour including European, US and Japanese dates in support of the world release of the album.

SYDONIA to play “Given to Destroyers” in its entirety @ Revolver Upstairs, Melbourne – 19 November 2011

Sydonia will take a break from recording their eagerly anticipated 2nd Album to hit Revolver on the 19th November 2011. This will be a special night as they will be playing their much heralded 1st album “Given to Destroyers” from start to finish for the first time in over four years!

Complete with epic drum and percussion sections, brooding melodies, sheer toughness and with the obligatory segues and the odd bit of hairy banjo, “Given to Destroyers” is an album that underscored the local scene and put Sydonia on the road with a number of established bands both here and in the USA.

Join Sydonia for a celebration of what lies behind as they forge ahead at Revolver Upstairs on the Saturday the 19th of November, 2011. – Buy Tickets Here

Sydonia have a plethora of fine support bands so be early to catch opening act Suzie Stapleton solo acoustic serenade, followed by the hardened brutal rock assault all the way from WA that is BRUTUS (buy their merch, the distance from Perth to Melbourne is the equivalent of London to Moscow. Perth is the most remote city in the world) and not to forget local alternative treat for the ears ENNIS TOLA.

Check out all of their respective Facebooks etc for a sneak preview, but as always, music is better in first person, so be there in it…right in it.
