Rock and roll music refines and unearths itself regardless of whether it’s in the zeitgeist. Good bands look forward as they look back, incorporating what they love with what feels good. In short, they keep on playing, and make albums that age well and write songs people find no matter what year it is.

N.C.’s Loose Jets’ self-titled full-length has ten songs with a mix of vibes beginning to end, led by two singers, and made from years of wisdom, playing in bands, and an unending desire for creating combustible, swagger-filled songs.

Its members have lengthy history in North Carolina bands – Chad Heye (The Needles, Sweetfeed), James Sardone (Burn¬ley Bros., Steve Albini-produced Brickbat), Chris Bare (Mountain Thrower) and Chuck Spry (Mike Slaton Band). They bring those experiences and their music tastes to Loose Jets, a varied album that’s gritty rock and roll that at times feels slightly haunted.

On songs boasting grooves more than caustic bravado and showy playing, the band comes into view. They deliver nuance on “Last Goodbye” (and subtle organ playing from Jason Woolwine) and bookend “Sacred T-Shirt” with a little Pink Floyd atmosphere. Heye and Sardone sing five songs each, contrasting timbres that are at once soulful and baring fangs.

Heye remains a dynamic guitar player, crafting riffs that sound fun and dangerous. As a singer he mixes snarl and cool feroc-ity on vocals burning through songs like “In Love with the Night” and “Watch Me Disappear,” an album highlight that’s soaked in attitude and pure abandon.

Things get a little trippy on “Hollow Earth” and there’s a solid road song with “Where it All Began.” They deliver a fine rootsy number with (Can’t) Leave It Alone,” another album highlight, one akin to 70’s rockers Faces and features soulful, contrasting vocals from Sardone.
