Matt Joe Gow talks about The Dead Leaves – Interview

How did this band album come about:

MJG – I had been working solo and also with ‘The Dead Leaves’ – on this new full band material. The band stuff had such an energy that the songs were just demanding all my attention. We ended up writing the album with the band in just 6 weeks. From there we got producers Scott Horscroft and Eric J Dubowsky on board, and at that point I realised it wasn’t just the energy of the

songs that was contagious, but actually in using all our influences in such a quick time span, and a fresh environment, we had managed to churn out some really unique and special songs.

Your ethnic heritage of Chinese and English is unique. Do you think it has an influence on your music?

MJG – It’s hard for me to say exactly how it influences the music, as I only have the one reference point. But on this album especially I have tried to use all the aspects of my life to influence the overall sound, as have all the members of the band, and I think my upbringing, ethnicity and growing up in New Zealand, will have influenced that.

Your tattoos have a family significance?

MJG – My grandfather was from China and we were really close. The inspiration comes from the Chinese water color paintings and various art pieces that adorned my grandparents house, in fact he painted my very first tattoo. They remind me of him and my family.

Melbourne has a unique music scene. What do you think of that scene?

MJG – I think it is certainly a vibrant music scene in Australia and Melbourne is no exception. On any given night there are a host of bands playing in any number of venues around the city from the big theaters to the smallest back alley cafe. It’sa cool place to live and I think it’s easy to take for granted how comforting it is that you can talk about all things music with most of the people you run in to in any bar because they are probably also in bands.
