Once upon a time, in a land far, far away (the NSW Central Coast, to be exact), there lived a little girl called Laura. For all obvious intents and purposes she appeared to be a (fairly) normal little girl. She liked playing elastics, capturing insects, watching Punky Brewster and roller-skating round in circles on the driveway. |
Now the little girl is all grown up and it would appear that as an adult, she’s no longer innocent. In fact, she has a side that’s downright sinister. On July 5, Laura Imbruglia releases ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend’, the first video from her sophomore album ‘Lighter Side Of….’. Let us say from the outset, in this video Laura displays certain kinds of behaviour that we do not encourage. Not at all the kind of behaviour that is expected from a girl who was raised a Catholic.
Sticking to the heartbreak theme of the album, Laura sings of heavy emotional turmoil as she shows complete disregard for several of the Ten Commandments- Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbour’s boyfriend, Thou Shalt Not Wear Unsightly Strapless dresses, Thou Shalt Not Play Handball with Poor Co-Ordination & Thou Shalt Wear Make-Up & Hold Thy Stomach In At Least Somewhat When Making Promotional Videos. We tried to discourage her from such a public parade of un-lady-likeness for fear of the impact it would have on her social standing. Alas, she refused to listen and ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend’ is the result.
It’s seems that the nouveaux youth of MySpace understand Laura. They know what it’s like to be young, to wear strapless dresses, and to be generally unladylike. At least, that’s what we assume, given they will be running a one week exclusive of the ‘I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend’ video from Friday July 2 – www.myspace.com/lauraimbruglia.
We hoped that the release of the video would be the end of it. That she would vent, nay, purge in a chaotic cathartic cataclysm that would release her from the jaws of uncouthness. But we were wrong. Each week during the month of August, Laura will dissect, deconstruct and demolish her self all over again – in public – as she takes up residency at the Excelsior Hotel, Surry Hills. She will break herself down and tear herself up to allow YOU to see who she really is – from the inside out. Each week, a new side of Laura will be revealed. Acoustic Laura. Country Covers Laura. Rock Band Laura. And Karaoke Laura. It is a little-known fact that Laura is terminally OBSESSED with karaoke. Rather than play a regular set, Laura will be wrapping up her residency by hosting an interactive karaoke party! She’ll do some Salt n Pepa, YOU’LL do some Bon Jovi. It’ll be great. This is the real Laura. Usually, we would shy away from publicising this occasion, but we feel it might help her recovery. So, please, join Laura – in her all of her incarnations – as she brings you 4 nights of ups and downs, of goodies and baddies, of loving and war-ing, of laughing and crying.
