Interview: Dominic Maker – MOUNT KIMBIE

Interview by Stuart Blythe
With London’s premiere post-dubstep duo Mount Kimbie returning to Australia in May (2012) as part of the The Hi Fi Shoreline Series, Stuart Blythe from Life Music Media caught up with Dominic Maker *one half of Mount Kimbie* for a chat.

LifeMusicMedia: You’re heading to Australia in May as part of The Hi Fi Shoreline Series of shows. What can fans expect at the shows?

Dominic Maker – Mount Kimbie: We’re not 100% sure yet. We’ve been locked away for a few months but hopefully we’ll be ‘bringing the party’ by the time we get down there.

LifeMusicMedia: Have you got any pre-show routines/superstitions?

Mount Kimbie: Used to like arriving about 5 minutes before we played but now we just make jokes about the local culture and try and stay at the optimum level of drunk for performing. Which is not very.

LifeMusicMedia: You played a string of tour dates in Australia last year (March 2011). What are your memories of that visit?

Mount Kimbie: Good times, good weather, good hotels, we had a great time with the Seekae guys. We really didn’t expect to see big audiences either. Was a fun tour.

LifeMusicMedia: Your album Crooks & Lovers has been critically acclaimed.
Are you working on a new release and do you feel pressured given the success of “Crooks & Lovers’

Mount Kimbie: We are working on a new record yes, not sure when it will be completed and would love to have some more properly finished pieces to play in full but hopefully people will be in to any new ideas we have. Don’t feel a lot of pressure to be honest, but that is after a few months of getting our heads right.

LifeMusicMedia: Which bands did you grow up listening too, and who still inspires you now?

Mount Kimbie: Grew up with a love of many different types of music. We were talking about which hologram acts we’d pay to see from the past, people that really inspired me early on to make music were Red Hot Chili Peppers(!), John Coltrane, Madlib, all kinds of stuff. Over the last few years I see Actress as really doing something special. If I’m ever uninspired or lose faith in electronic music, I listen to his music.

LifeMusicMedia: You’ve had a busy couple of years: extensive touring throughout America, Europe, England and performances at some of the world’s biggest festivals. What have been the stand out memories for you?

Mount Kimbie: Oh there have been a lot. We never imagined we would be able to travel so far with this music and it’s been fantastic. Meeting people, making good friends and some amazing shows all stick out. Perth, SXSW, New York, San Fransisco and most of Germany were all incredible.

LifeMusicMedia: We’re looking forward to your upcoming visit. Is there anything you would like to say to your growing fan base?

Mount Kimbie: Obviously thank you for the support as we wouldn’t be able to do it without people being vocal about it and turning up. We should have some exciting news about releases and what not soon too.
