Frankly! It’s A Pop Festival – 2011 (Brisbane Festival)

Frankly! is back for Brisbane Festival 2011 with more esoteric songstresses, enigmatic audio mavericks and otherwise audacious pop deconstructionists. The 2011 festival features a collection of visionary artists and bands from the USA, Japan and Australia.

Making its debut in 2009 and graduating its sophomore year with acts such as Xiu Xiu, High Places and Crayon Fields, Frankly! quickly raised eyebrows in Australia’s indie scene for its innovative program and unique setting at Brisbane’s Powerhouse.

This year Frankly! pays special attention to the burgeoning Los Angeles Hypnagogic-pop underground by showcasing the Not Not Fun label. Easily one of the most prolific and eccentric labels on the face of the planet, we welcome Not Not Fun icons LA Vampires and label mates Wet Hair. They will play alongside Australian label-mates Angel Eyes and Blank Realm.

Highlighting new avant pop from Japan, Frankly! plays host to Tokyo Folktronica artist Miko (backed by Celer), Osaka eccentric song queen Ytamo and the new Prince of Osaka’s psychedelic pop subculture Oorutaichi.

From Australia, Frankly! proudly lists ambient pop guru Pikelet and back porch indie folk Twerps to round out the lineup.

Frankly! curator Lawrence English said that the 2011 line-up is an exciting addition to the festival’s legacy. “In 2010 we proved that there’s more to pop music than people might expect,” said English. “Pop can be experimental, interesting and thought-provoking and Frankly! is about bringing together the world’s best to remind folks that there’s a whole galaxy of sound out there and some of it is pretty damned exciting.”
