CD Review: Drawn From Bees – “Run Away”

Review: Victoria Nugent

Drawn From Bees   The latest offering from Brisbane art rock band Drawn from Bees is their new single Run Away, a melodious, Powderfinger-esque sample of their particular brand of indie rock.

Honest lyrics are teamed with a full-bodied acoustic sound to produce this mellow sounding single, hinting at more good things to come from the band’s upcoming album –

Fear Not the Footsteps of the Departed, to be released on May 21 2010.

The band’s catchy shouts of “woohoo” and “hey” add a lighter tone to their four part vocal harmonies, balancing the track’s strong lower tones.

Also on the disc are strong supporting tracks “All the World’s A Stage” and “Many Miles”. “All the World’s A Stage” has a more melancholy sound and a slower tempo, with some great falsetto sounds in places.

“Many Miles”, also acts as a great, guitar-heavy showcase for the band’s vocal harmonies with a strong rhythm.

Drawn From Bees formed in 2008, after the members of defunct progressive rock band Glasshouse decided to give themselves a second chance in a different direction. The band is made up of lead guitarist and keyboard player Raven Jones, guitarist Dan James, bass guitarist Stew Riddle, and drummer Matt Wedmaier, with vocals distributed between the members. Since their reformation, the band has released two EPs and a mini album And the Blind Shall Lead the Way.

Drawn From Bees’ sound is reminiscent of classic Australian rock, with solid backing and layered vocals making Run Away a truly worthwhile listen. Watch out, these rockers may well be Brisbane’s next big thing, with music that really is sweet as honey.
