The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) launches a free Sunday Talks program to coincide with Tim Burton: The Exhibition, beginning with an insight into a Burton favourite, The Nightmare Before Christmas, on Sunday 18 July.
The program brings together artists and composers whose work has a particular relationship to the work of Tim Burton with commentators who will lead discussion about Burton’s work. |

Fresh Ground Lends A Hand To Independent Artists
Six independent local artists will “now call the ‘Judy’ home” as part of the Judith Wright Centre FRESH GROUND artist-in-residence initiative, Director Ruth Hodgman announced.

MADDESTMAXIMVS: PLANET AND STARS SEQUENCE @ Judith Wright Centre June-July 2010
Artist Shaun Gladwell presents his work, MADDESTMAXIMVS: Planet & Stars Sequence (created as Australia’s contribution to the 2009 Venice Biennale), for two weeks only at the Institute of Modern Art. Influenced by his experiences in Australia’s landscape of the outback, his interest in extreme sports, and Mad Max movies, the work is a suite of videos accompanied by sound, photographic and sculptural works. Roadkill kangaroos are found on the side of highways by a black leather clad motorcyclist and given a ritualistic burial, a figure surfs a vehicle as it moves through desert roads, a masked individual rapidly paints and subsequently erases images of the universe in open arid settings, and a group of figures spin against natural rock formations. Seemingly infuriated by the old avant-garde presumption that artworks should criticise and challenge their publics, the art world is currently enjoying a post-critical turn. Pop Life, a show which recently debuted at London’s Tate Modern, celebrates artists who aim to please and entertain, who embrace commercialism and populism, and want their audiences to like them. They include Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons, Damian Hirst, and Takashi Murakami. Scott Redford vs. Michael Zavros brings this idea home, pitting two local post-critical artists – both born and bred on the Gold Coast – against one another. Scott Redford is a former Queer artist who turned his back on social critique to assert the superior aesthetic of Surfers Paradise. Michael Zavros is a photo-realist painter famed for painting beautiful things beautifully: good shoes, bespoke suits, mansions, baroque interiors, pretty boys, and perfume bottles. Since the mid 1990s, Stephen has been a fixture at literally hundreds of live shows, capturing the excitement and energy through his lens. All up, he’s taken more than 30,000 images and, throughout March 2010, his favourite 50 will be on display at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of a unique exhibition simply called “Rock and Roll”. There’s no doubting that over the past few decades Brisbane has grown into a true music town. And few people have been there to see the city’s evolution quite like acclaimed music photographer Stephen Booth. Since the mid 1990s, Stephen has been a fixture at literally hundreds of live shows, capturing the excitement and energy through his lens. All up, he’s taken more than 30,000 images and, throughout March 2010, his favourite 50 will be on display at Brisbane Powerhouse as part of a unique exhibition simply called “Rock and Roll”. The photos featured in this very special show range from intimate gigs in long lost venues, through to huge stadium extravaganzas – from a punk show in a car park to U2 in an enormodome. “Rock and Roll” will rekindle those musical memories we all have. THE SEED 2010 – An Arts Grant Fund Applications Now Open In its sixth year running The JB Seed, will be re-branded The Seed. Encouraged by the amazing generosity and trust people have shown the project, this shift will make The Seed an initiative whose ownership is that of the entire community of contributors. |
The Seed has evolved over the years to become an integral part of the Australian Arts & Music industry, contributing over $533,000 worth of funding to over 200 Artists and Music Managers. The passion and support of all contributors has helped to make it what it is today and although John Butler and co-founder Danielle Caruana will remain a driving force behind the project, they believe it is time to make The Seed something that the arts community can call their own.

Every year the population of the sleepy seaside town of Lorne, Victoria swells. Music lovers from all over Australia pack their bags and load their cars and make the pilgrimage to the Falls Music and Arts Festival.

Lorne is situated on the Great Ocean Road and while it is tempting for me to keep on traveling that road, I know that rolling green hills covered in lush green grass and stages set for some the world’s best acts await, just 10 kilometres inland.
Traffic crawls along the winding dusty road, but I’m sustained by the knowledge of what is about to be unveiled, around the next corner.

I put up my tent and it disappears amongst a sea of temporary canvas homes. What hope do I have of finding it late tonight? Ah well, it’s all part of the adventure!

Josh Pyke has worked with some very talented artists and directors in the past, and now he’s calling on his fans to create the video for his new single ‘You Don’t Scare Me’.
Josh will choose his favourite clip from all those submitted, and the video will be used as the official clip for the single. It will be premiered on Channel Ten’s Video Hits, and will then be serviced to other music video programs and stations. The director of the clip will also be awarded AUD$2500 and signed copies of all of Josh’s albums. |
