Metropole is the first album in 8 years from the Chicago bred trio. It’s a blistery, hook-heavy sound with a lyrical narrative that captures what vocalist/bassist Brendan Kellys calls “that alone-in-a-crowd, stranger-in-a-strange-land kind of shit—a feeling of such weird solitude that you don’t even know what’s up and what’s down”. Brendan Kelly, Chris McCaughan (vocals/guitar), and Neil Hennessey (drums) took their wide range of influences and inspirations from both classic punk/hardcore bands including Jawbreaker, NOFX, Propaghandi, Bad Religion and late-’90s hip hop like Outkast’s Aquemini to create their most dynamic record to date. The samples heard throughout the album are sound recordings of street musicians, recorded by the band on their cell phones. Take the horn at the start of “Acheron River” that Kelly describes as “a dude on his back in the middle of the road, so drunk he couldn’t even see.” Or the piano at the end of “Seventeener (17th and 37th) that was a grand piano someone was playing in the middle of the street. Everything from accordion to bagpipes helps capture the urban isolation that saturates so much of Metropole.

KillRockStar Entertainment, Tombowler and Tone Deaf present post-punk instigators Gang of Four in Australia to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their classic album Entertainment! along with all the hits that followed!
Entertainment! was a rare bird for its time, an enthralling amalgam of punk, funk and angular rock that signalled a changing-of-the-guard ushering in of the post- punk era. Released in 1979, this spiky collection of danceable songs would go on to inspire a generation – stripped of excess flesh, it revealed a twitching skeleton rising against apathy and commodity. The influence of Entertainment! is still being felt in music today. To celebrate 35 years since its release, Gang of Four will perform the entire album in full and all the hits that followed across Australia in 2014.

This time last year the delightful Hat Fitz and Cara were riding high. They’d toured Europe, receiving great acclaim for their wonderful Wiley Ways album, and had then come home excited for the album’s Australian release and tour. Wiley Ways reached the top of the Australian Blues Charts (it stayed firmly in the charts for 12 months), and received rave reviews all round. To top things off, Hat Fitz & Cara’s shows and festival appearances were attracting large, often sell-out crowds. It seemed that Australia as a whole had finally caught on to the charm, wit and wonderful musicality of the wee lass from Ireland and the big, bushy Queenslander.
Then in December 2012 Cara was involved in a near fatal car accident, not far from the home she shares with life and musical partner Fitz. A driver pulled out in front of her while she was travelling at 70kms an hour, leaving her with nowhere to go. Fractured ribs, a damaged 9th vertebrae, a sprained back and neck and substantial frontal lobe bruising, along with a whole world of pain, brought the progress they had made to a grinding halt. But Cara was lucky to be alive, and they were grateful for it. Together, Cara and her gentle giant Fitz tackled the doctors’ & specialist appointments and the resulting legal wrangling, while keeping their family fed and afloat.
