“Weird Al” Yankovic Australian Tour 2011 [Tour News]

“Weird Al” Yankovic, the undisputed king of pop culture parody, has sold more comedy recordings than any other artist in history. In a career spanning nearly three decades, he has amassed 30 Gold and Platinum albums, 7 Gold and Platinum-certified home videos and 3 Grammy Awards (with 11 nominations).

The singer-songwriter’s first real brush with fame came in 1979 when he recorded “My Bologna” (a spoof of The Knack’s “My Sharona”) in the bathroom across the hall from his college campus radio station where he had a weekly DJ shift.   ‘My Mind is an Echo Chamber’ was a song title before it was a song. The music comes from a love of dancehall and dub… punk rock and a sense of longing… distorted guitars and analog synths…the good kind…the kind with the broken faders. It’s King Tubby and Barrington Levy booming from a ghetto blaster set up on the side of an empty pool. It’s Scratch Perry lacing up his chucks and eating a burrito con pollo with lyrics from a Morrissey song swimming in his brain. Tape echoes, blue horns and skittering drums.

Sir Bob Geldof to play @ Lyric Theatre, Star City – Sydney on 16 December 2010!

Sir Bob Geldof is coming to Australia and playing one show only at the Lyric Theatre, Star City – Sydney on 16 December 2010.

Along with his band he will be performing a broad selection of his music from his roots in The Boomtown Rats to his subsequent solo career. In addition to many of the old favourites and past mega hits there could be a few surprises with material from his new album How To Write Songs That Will Sell (58 1/2), due for international release in February 2011.

The members of the band supporting Geldof’s vocals and guitar include Pete Briquette, Vince Loveday on violin, mandolin and ukulele, Niall Power on percussion, Alan Dunn on keyboards and accordion, Jim Russell on drums and John Turnbull on lead guitar. Together they form a highly professional, close-knit group, whose amicable interaction on stage creates a fun and memorable evening.
