Live Review: Vampire Weekend + Gang of Youths @ Hordern Pavilion, Sydney – January 8, 2014

Review: Heather McNab
Arriving at the Hordern Pavilion early it was clearly already abuzz with a large groups of excited fans dancing along to and being drawn in by support band Gang of Youths. The band performing an excellent set, preparing the crowd and setting expectations high for the main act, Vampire Weekend.

After a short break and the venue filling quickly, the lights dim and with enthusiastic screams and whistles from the audience, Vampire Weekend take to the stage starting out with “Diane Young”. Fans were onboard from the first note, singing along to every word of every song, completely emmersed and happy. Frontman Ezra Koenig’s easy style relaxing the crowd with a feel good vibe. In contrast, bassist Chris Baio’s dancing and movements were mesmerising, a life force all to themselves.

Gang Of FourKillRockStar Entertainment, Tombowler and Tone Deaf present post-punk instigators Gang of Four in Australia to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their classic album Entertainment! along with all the hits that followed!

Entertainment! was a rare bird for its time, an enthralling amalgam of punk, funk and angular rock that signalled a changing-of-the-guard ushering in of the post- punk era. Released in 1979, this spiky collection of danceable songs would go on to inspire a generation – stripped of excess flesh, it revealed a twitching skeleton rising against apathy and commodity. The influence of Entertainment! is still being felt in music today. To celebrate 35 years since its release, Gang of Four will perform the entire album in full and all the hits that followed across Australia in 2014.

Live Review: The Roots @ Hordern Pavilion, Sydney – December 27, 2013

Review by Kristie Nicolas
There are few bands that could get away with pulling apart their own songs and reinterpreting them live on stage. There are even fewer bands that could make that sound good. The legendary hip hop crew The Roots are one of them. This past Friday, 27th December, at the Hordern Pavillion in Sydney, The Roots took to the stage to show all hip hop heads not only how to successfully do just that but how to go beyond any boundaries put on them by their genre. But did fans really expect anything less from one of hip hop’s most notable groups and the house band of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon? No.

Live Review: Melvins + Helmet + Nunchukka Superfly @ Hi-Fi Bar, Sydney – December 15, 2013

We were shocked to see no line up for tonight’s show, just moments before opening time. There were literally 15 people waiting patiently in front of Sydney’s HiFi, with crowds of soccer fans streaming past at from Allianz Stadium wondering what these scruffy metal heads were doing out in public on a Sunday evening. Thankfully though, all this lack of early enthusiasm proved to be was a more mature, clever kind of music fan that clearly hates waiting in lines.

By the time Sydney’s own Nunchukka Superfly were around half way through their crunching set of jam-room super grooves the HiFi was more than half full – as if a couple of busloads of punters had miraculously all arrived at once. Their insistent, explosive riffing got the early crowd moving, with spasmodic, jagged physical contortions on stage reinforcing the powerful movements of the music. Be sure to look for the band’s forthcoming album “Open Your Eyes to Smoke” being launched at Valve on December 21 – their first since 2008.

Live Review: Alicia Keys + John Legend @ Allphones Arena, Sydney – December 11, 2013

Review by Kristie Nicolas

A double billing doesn’t happen very often here in Australia, let alone in the often neglected genre of R&B. but this past Wednesday, at Allphones Arena that’s just what Sydney-siders were treated to. They turned up in droves to see R&B darling Alicia Keys perform, along with special guest John Legend on the Set The World On Fire tour.

Legend took to the stage as the crowd was streaming in for the show. For many artists this could very well throw them off. But Legend seemed to take this as a challenge. And boy, did he rise to the task. Opening with the percussive, electronic styling of ‘Made To Love’, from his latest album, Love In The Future, Legend and his band came out in fine form. They remained that way through out, not swayed even for a moment by the bright lights on the audience. Legend gave a spirited and high energy performance, supported by his band and stunning backing vocalists, who almost stole the show with their sassy choreographed moves and vocals. While Legend proved a more than competent show man, it was in the stripped down moments that he really shone. Sitting at the grand piano that adorned the centre of the stage, Legend gave the audience a lesson in heartfelt crooning. Whether covering Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing In The Dark”, tear-jerker “Ordinary People” or the current number one song in the country, “All Of Me”, Legend’s performance was pure perfection.

Live Review: Steel Panther + Buckcherry + Fozzy @ Hordern Pavilion, Sydney – Saturday December 7, 2013

Words and Pics: Ben Hosking – www.hoskingindustries.com.au
Steel Panther have graced Australian shores numerous times over the last handful of years, each time moving to larger and larger stages around the country. However, when we first heard about the mock-hair metal band’s move to Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion for their ‘Spread the Disease’ tour, we thought it might have been a little optimistic.

But arriving just in time to see first support act Fozzy take to the large Hordern stage, fronted by WWE wrestler Chris Jericho, with a line of people waiting to get into the venue that seemed to stretch on forever, it was obvious that filling the big shed would prove no problem tonight. With their southern-tinged brand of high energy rock ‘n’ metal, Fozzy easily whips the early punters into a frenzy of sweaty bodies despite the venue being half empty.
