Iconic American psych-folkster Daniel Johnston toured Australia for the first (and possibly only) time earlier this year and, as is his habit, he researched and then invited a local artist to join him on stage as his ‘backing-band’. Honoured, Old Man River took up the challenge and on that tour Australian audiences for the first time heard music from the forthcoming album, simply titled – ‘Trust’. The excitement and reaction was undeniable. Old Man River has returned with something very special.
Now Old Man River embarks on his first headline tour in more than 2 years Continue reading →

Brother and sister duo Angus & Julia Stone are making their mark on 2010. With a new album, Down The Way having just been released, the Stone siblings embarked on an Australian tour to promote this wonderful new release for a wide circle of fans. The stage had been decorated into a furnished room, which lamps, old cameras, and a backdrop made of wallpaper decor’ and old photo frames. The term ‘Intimate gig’ could not have been truer, despite being played at the Palace.
Opening up the night in Melbourne was local singer songwriter Lavelle Collins. Playing solo with only his guitar in hand, Collins played a somewhat generic folk set.
Playing an acoustic set due to two of Boy & Bear’s band member’s being on tour with Laura Marling, Boy & Bear was comprised of a trio tonight. Reminiscent of the UK’s Mumford & Sons, Boy & Bear are such a wonderful band to watch perform. Such being, it was incredibly disappointing to see the three remaining members having to compete with the chatter of a crowd who really did not care. Many moments of perfect harmonies were blown away by the chatter of some stoned/drunk girls in the front of the floor area. Regardless of this, paying attention to the band, we were treated to a strong, honest and wonderful set which was closed with the excellent Mexican Mavis. Boy & Bear have an EP released in stores and online soon. Continue reading →
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the release of their classic 1980 album, “Doolittle”, Pixies – Black Francis, Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering have embarked on a very special tour. ‘The Doolittle Tour’ – which arrives in Australia in March 2010. Selling out shows left, right and centre all around Australia! This is the first night in Melbourne at Festival Hall and I felt like this monkey has gone to heaven, photographing one of my all time FAV bands. Seeing Black Francis, up so close, while he singing/screaming “TAME” was fantastic! 🙂 Continue reading →

FINALLY!!! The welcome return of Pavement – one of the world’s most iconic acts and one of my all time personal FAV’s!
Having seen them ages ago way way BACK in the rock time machine playing the Prince Of Wales in St Kilda in 1993. Two years later at The Showgrounds, they played the BIG DAY OUT. Then they came back for one last performance in 1998 and they went their separate ways. 🙁 Continue reading →

Mini Mansions are a Los Angeles band most notable for band member Michael Shuman, who is more well known for being the bassist of Wires on Fire and Queens of The Stone Age. Shuman plays vocals, keyboard and guitar for Mini Mansion. Other band members are Zach Dawes on bass, keys, and vocals and Tyler Parkford on vocals, keyboard, and guitar.
2nd Support Act: Shaman Son
WHO IS THIS? Is that the love child of Rob Younger from Radio Birdman?
NAH! It’s a Melbourne 5-piece Shaman Son, who are a fresh blast of liquid sunshine into the main vein of the Australian music industry. An acid test for a new generation of kids who want to turn on, tune in and rock out. Though they wear their combined influences on their sleeves Shaman Son aren’t content to merely dwell in the past, instead they reference, distil and reinterpret, settling on a sound that is positively mind expanding.
Playing times: Shaman Son 9pm * Mini Mansions 10pm * Spinnerette 11pm – 12am
Every now and then a band arrives onto the music scene without fanfare and hype, just doing what they are born to, and what follows is large audiences and a fanatical following. And then at a certain point the industry wakes up and says “where did that come from?”
JACKSON JACKSON is one of those bands. They have become a solid live touring favourite throughout Australia since they launched a couple of years back. They are that band that supposedly no one knows about, who just happen to pack out every venue they play, many nights over. And the fans like it that way. Continue reading →
