Live Review | Charles Bradley + Saskwatch @ Melbourne Zoo Twilight – March 7, 2014
Review by Ben Connolly
With a white sequined dinner jacket, and a ‘fro straight outta Brooklyn circa 1972, it was clear from the first strained note that Charles Bradley was every inch of his impressive mythology. The bio reads like a carefully scripted wrap-sheet: he was raised in a dirt-poor Brooklyn, from which he escaped only to spend decades drifting and working odd jobs, and spending serious time as a homeless grafter. On record, it’s heart-on-the-sleeve honesty of a man who knows no other. On stage it’s merely confirmation, as the performer pours every last ounce of feeling into the overwrought vocals and leaves nothing behind.

The Holidays release new album “Real Feel” | touring in March
The Holidays new album Real Feel celebrates its release today.
The follow up to Post Paradise and next week’s triple J feature album, Real Feel was painstakingly yet lovingly written over two years across numerous cities and continents, then recorded locally in Melbourne and Sydney. A travelogue of sorts, it echoes singer Simon Jones’ songwriting sojourns through major cities like Berlin, London, Paris and Tokyo.
“This was a difficult record to make, always searching for a sound just beyond our grasp, narrowing in and trying to capture some essence. I had an idea for a sound that I couldn’t quite name or explain, a vague feeling, somewhere between love and loneliness, like a daydream where you can’t quite remember the content but the feelings you had remain. I guess that’s what this album is, trying to make real the intangible feelings of a few years of living.” – Simon Jones, The Holidays
Fans would already be familiar with new tracks ‘Voices Drifting’, ‘All Time High’ and ‘Home’, which have helped the band firmly put themselves back on the radar via radio play and blog love, after their international adventures.
In less than two weeks, the band will take to the road for a national tour that will see them travel to regional as well as metro locations. Supporting The Holidays on the tour will be Brisbane indie-pop stars, The Cairos. Tickets are available for all shows now.

Brisbane five-piece Settling – “Drop the Game” (Music Stream)
Settling are an indie-pop five-piece from Brisbane, Australia. Settling started in 2012 as the solo project of Brisbane singer-songwriter, Tim Swanston. After collaborating with local vocalist/guitarist Kurtis Tupangaia, they duo made their debut into the Brisbane live music scene, backed by their trusty laptop. Deciding that they needed to flesh out their sound, they added local musicians Andrew Markwell (lead guitar) and Becky Meimaris (drums). This addition led to a change in musical direction, taking their acoustic-led folk songs into a heavier, poppier sound.
