Live Review | Monster Magnet + King of the North + Arrowhead @ Hi-Fi Bar, Sydney – April 4, 2014

To say that we were a little concerned about Monster Magnet’s set upon reaching the HiFi Bar just as the doors were opening would be an understatement. Simply put, there was very little sign of life. Granted, it was a dismal evening with some drizzle and cold Autumn winds blowing through, but there was hot night of raucous rock and roll to be enjoyed inside.
Regardless, Sydney band Arrowhead opened the night’s festivities to an almost empty room, rocking out with an energetic mix of mid-paced stoner/desert/Sabbath vibes. The three-piece made a beautiful racket and the small crowd clearly appreciated their driving, grooving slabs of riffage.

Lorde is currently touring South America for Lollapalooza in Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Before the 10th annual Gum Ball hits the exquisite bush of Belford in the Hunter Valley, the festival has released its program as well as made three exciting new additions to the impressively diverse program.
The exciting new additions include Australian grunge rock icon Adalita, famed surf film producer Andrew Kidman and his ethereal band The Windy Hills, as well as spectacular local troubadours The Lairs.
The three acts will join bands such as King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Jinja Safari and Adrian Edmondson on the Friday evening, whilst the Saturday program will see a packed day of genre -hopping with the Hoodoo Gurus performing around 10pm before an all star band led by Nicky Bomba enters stage left to close out the festival in a massive 10 year celebration.

The Acacia Strain | Announce National Tour for April/May 2014
The Acacia Strain don’t like labels. Who does? Instead, they’re just an all encompassing ‘Heavy’ and heavy has no boundaries. Since forming in Massachusetts USA in 2001, the band have released six album, two splits, done an awesome cover of Slayer’s Seasons In The Abyss, toured with everyone from Hatebreed to Crowbar to The Casualties (and so many variously styled bands in between), played the Warped Tour and cracked the top 200 with two albums. Simply being ‘Heavy’ releases the shackles and truly lets a band do what they want. In 2012 they signed to Rise Records and released their latest and most crushing effort Death Is The Only Mortal. Later that same year they were involved in a rollover accident but it only slowed them down, it did not stop them.

In Adelaide, support comes from fiery metal quartet Valiant Jones. They’ll be joined by the brooding, doom-tinged ambience of instrumental trio Last Days of Kali.
