Cat Power Announced as First Artist in Melt 2016 Line Up **Updated**

Cat-Power-2016-Tour
Cat Power Sun has been forced to cancel her forthcoming tour of Australia and New Zealand, including her show at ‪#‎MELTQueerFest‬.

Cat Power a/k/a Chan Marshall suffers from Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) a potentially fatal rare blood disease that causes swelling around the throat, oesophagus and internal organs. Its the same condition which caused her to postpone some European dates in 2012 – all of which were rescheduled.

This is the first time in an 18 year touring history with Australia that Chan has been forced to postpone any shows and she is determined too make it back ASAP and in good health. All tickets for this tour will remain valid for the rescheduled dates which will be advised in the coming weeks.

Cat Power aka Georgia-born singer/songwriter Chan Marshall returns to Australia this summer for a series of intimate theatre-only performances. The first artist to be announced as part of Brisbane Powerhouse’s MELT 2016 line up, Power will take to the stage on Friday 12 February 2016.

Performing solo, the show will boast a whole swag of new material and old favourites ahead of a new album recording this summer.

According to Power her intimate relationship with her fans has nurtured her prolific touring history.

“I’ve never had the feeling or sensation of growing up having a “home”. While starting to tour the world 20 years ago, I’ve been given home and safe places through the friends I’ve made and the fans who’ve shown me so much love and acceptance.

“The connection with my fans is the sole reason I am alive and never gave up on myself – my life. This makes me continue feeling confident to tour… so I love to meet my listeners again, up close, with every chance I get.”

Cat Power was discovered in 1994 by the drummer of Sonic Youth. Her unconventional career has spanned punk, folk, blues. Power first toured Australia in 1997 at the behest of Dirty Three / Xylouris White drummer Jim White, a visit that also saw Chan record her album Moon Pix with both White and Dirty Three guitarist Mick Turner. Follow-up visits have included both band and solo excursions and have included festival slots at Meredith, Golden Plains, MONA FOMA, Sydney Festival, PIAF and headline shows in some of the country’s premier venues.

More recently, alongside Jakob Dylan (son of Bob), Power has lent her vocals to a duo-rendering of You Showed Me, a lost classic from sixties mavericks The Turtles. The track is a feature of Echo In The Canyon, an all-star indie tribute to the California folk-sound and also features tributes by Fiona Apple, Beck, Jakob Dylan and others.

Cat Power also recently provided the voiceover to Janis, a movie-length documentary about troubled female rock-pioneer Janis Joplin and has added her vocals to a character from animated TV Show Adult Swim. In between all of this and the writing of new material, Ms. Marshall gave birth to a baby boy.

The full program for MELT 2016 will be released in late November.
