Ali Barter sends greetings from Los Angeles!
2016 has begun with a bang and a roar, with a ripping new single pointing the way to a new attitude to recording, if not a whole new sound.
‘Far Away’ vaulted forth following writing and recording sessions in LA with writer and producer Harlan Silverman. But it’s a very different Barter and a very different sound to the one many expected. The languid and nostalgic pop of previous releases, which most recent single ‘Hypercolour’ marked the departure from, is replaced by rock ‘n’ roll’s gold standard… the quiet verse and massive chorus. It’s got guitar feedback, screaming riffs, chorused vocals and sounds like someone who’s getting something out of their system.
“And thank god it did,” she said on the eve of the single’s release. “I went to LA, I felt so free on the other side of the world, unknown and with no expectations… I sat down with Harlan in his garage and it all came out.”
Space, time, pollution and listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on the beach weaved its magic. Back in Melbourne the new words and ideas were harnessed by producer Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy) who realised the new material could be nothing less than rock. The pair brought in collaborator Stephen Mowat on mixing duties and the new work was born.
“As much as I had to let go of that frustration to capture it in song I had to let go of the constant polishing of previous recordings,” she said.
Ali Barter’s got a new groove and it was never where she’d thought it would be. She will be playing St Jerome’s Laneway Festival and will launch Far Away in Melbourne next month co headlining with Davey Lane.
