Interview : Ingrid Michaelson

Interview by Robert Pugsley
With Ingrid Michaelson visiting our shores for her sophomore tour this September *2012*, our Robert Pugsley asked Ingrid about her new album, television and what lies ahead.

LMM: So tell me about your new album Human Again – the writing process, the recording process, working with David Kahne and what you think of the final product?

Ingrid: David Kahne pushed me to really sing. He asked me why I never sang the way I sing live on recordings. It really sparked something in me and inspired me to write songs that vocally opened me up. And that in turn allowed me to open up in all other ways too. I am very proud of Human Again. I feel like I wanted to do something bolder and stronger and I did.

LMM: Human Again has charted well and has received positive reviews, E Weekly etc so are you happy with the reception it has received?

Ingrid: I try not to put too much value in reviews, positive or negative. I just want the people who buy my records and come to my shows to love it.

LMM: How is Human Again different from you previous albums?

Ingrid: It is louder! And broader and filled with lush orchestration. I felt braver and freer when writing and recording it. Kind of amazing to let go of fear.

LMM: Your music has been used extensively on television, Scrubs/Greys Anatomy/One Tree Hill etc, – how has this helped your music reach a broader audience?

Ingrid: People who may have never heard of me are all of a sudden aware. It is an amazing way to get your music out to the world without major representation.

LMM: Has marketing your music on television been a conscious decision?

Ingrid: I don’t think so. It all sort of fell in my lap (after playing shows for 5 years…)

LMM: Have you ever sat down to relax watch some TV and your song starts up? If so that must feel great?

Ingrid: It feels odd! I have a lot of difficulty understanding that i have any sort of celebrity. Or any sort of fan base. It is so odd. I am a quite down to the ground, quiet life girl. So to hear my music in such a public forum is just…odd. I don’t know how else to describe it!

LMM: What does the future hold?

Ingrid: Touring in the states, UK and Australia. I am so excited about Australia. The audiences are some of the best I have every played for. Warm and easy to play for.
