HOMEBAKE Music, Film, Arts Festival 2011 – The Classic Edition!

Once again comes that time of the year, where HOMEBAKE HQ frantically places the finishing touches to our annual announcement reminding one & all that summer is looming, and that it will also be the official start to the great Australian Summer festival period. And thus, with all the fuss, excitement, and usual glamour, Australia’s most famous antipodean all star event can possibly muster, we are beyond elation and incredibly relieved to finally announce our very special 16th anniversary version being –

HOMEBAKE Music, Film, Arts Festival 2011- The Classic edition!

Yes folks, Sydney city’s historic Domain will once again come alive with the sound of music, film, laughs and more with the much anticipated return of Homebake after having had a short break in 2010. Over the years, HOMEBAKE has played host to a virtual swag of national and internationally famous local superstars, and has now matured to become one of Australia’s most important and respected festival events, and for this very reason, we are thrilled (& forever grateful) to return bigger and brighter than ever with our most musically eclectic, stunning and incredibly talented selection of the finest artists borne out of the Southern Hemisphere.

Despite the ‘classic’ moniker – & similar to other major festival events worldwide nowadays – Homebake always pays dignified host and respect to those purveyors of music genres of the past, and this year sees us welcome some of the most honoured musicians in Australian music history alongside the biggest contemporary names (including comedy and film). So…for the young, the old, and the fun at heart, it is with great pleasure and excitement that Homebake 2011 presents…

Get excited….with their exceptional power, this December in the Domain, Australia’s NICK CAVE returns to unleash the cinematic rock that is GRINDERMAN – the band’s first ever appearance at Homebake. As GRINDERMAN, Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos conjure up a sexual onslaught, from psychedelic melodramas (the gleeful “No Pussy Blues”) to seductive singles (“Heathen Child”). GRINDERMAN have delivered two internationally acclaimed albums to date, and were recently asked by Portishead to perform at London’s ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace. Josh Homme (QOTSA), meanwhile, has lent his remixing skills to latest track “Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man” while the track “Heathen Child” is on the shortlist for MOJO Honours 2011 for Best Single. Nick Cave recently paired with the mesmerizing Neko Case to record a cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There” for True Blood Season 3. “There’s a speed and intensity to Grinderman 2 unheard before,” wrote Pitchfork. Steel yourself. www.grinderman.com

Making her debut appearance at Homebake this year is Pip Brown, aka LADYHAWKE. The 31-year-old ‘Paris is Burning’ star is set to ignite once again in 2011, with the release of her highly-anticipated second album (due out soon). With contagious hits like “Dusk Till Dawn” and “My Delirium”, Pip took home six New Zealand Music Awards and two ARIAs in 2009, over 100,000 British fans keeping her disc in the charts for a staggering 33 weeks. For her next effort, recorded in NZ and France with Pascal Gabriel (Goldfrapp), LADYHAWKE reckons she’s embracing her rock & roll past: get ready “for one badass listen”. www.ladyhawkemusic.com

We’re chuffed to announce the return of the ‘worldly based’ PNAU to Australia, who’ll perform old favourites and hot new tracks from their brand new album, Soft Universe. Released shortly to much anticipation, Soft Universe (etc etc/Universal Music) has won over radio as triple j’s Feature Album last week, while singles ‘The Truth’ and ‘Solid Ground’ have taken over dance floors across the nation & internationally courtesy of remixes by Adrian Lux and Cassian. Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes’ special line-up for Homebake will include the Pippettes’ Gwenno Saunders. “To me, it’s very raw and very crafted: melodic heartbreak,” says Nick of PNAU’s latest. “It feels more like all or nothing than it’s ever been.” www.myspace.com/pnau

His ‘Like Drawing Blood’ album was recently voted 11th in triple j’s hottest 100 Australian albums of all time. He’s collaborated with a host of Australian artists throughout his career and his most recent single ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ featuring vocals from fellow homebaker Kimbra has already made an impressive mark of what’s to come from his third album ‘Making Mirrors’ released on August 19th. Described as an eclectic mix of ’60s exotica, classic R’n’B, spacey Fairlight-pop, Afrobeat jams and gentle Omnichord-backed confessionals, GOTYE will deliver his most assured and cohesive record to date.We welcome ARIA award winning songwriter and multi instrumentalist GOTYE back to the Homebake fold in 2011. http://gotye.com/

One of the most important Australian voices to emerge this decade; we’re honoured to announce the debut Homebake performance of multi-ARIA, AIR and Deadly award-winner GURRUMUL YUNUPINGU. Hailing from Arnhem Land, the former Yothu Yindi and current Saltwater Band member blew away listeners in 2008 with his first solo release, the 500,000+ selling GURRUMUL. Fusing traditional Yolngu music with gospel, country and blues and recorded in Byron Bay and New York, in April 2011 GURRUMUL unveiled his second LP, Rrakala (a sub-group of the Gumatj clan), the album debuting at #3 on the ARIA charts has now been certified gold. Utterly spell-binding, GURRUMUL’s Homebake performance is a must-see. www.gurrumul.com

Reckon you know your music trivia? Prepared to battle it out with the experts? Get ready to pit your knowledge against your mates – and a few special musical guests – direct from TV screens across Australia with the debut Homebake appearance of SBS’s most original & hugely popular quiz show: ROCKWIZ! The success of the inaugural ROCKWIZ Live Theatre Tour in 2010 (47,500 tickets sold over 32 shows) saw hosts Julia Zemiro, Brian Nankervis, and the ever-talented ROCKWIZ orchestra sharpening their skills… and now it’s time for the team to hit the Domain. Tune into SBS each Saturday night to prepare your brain for Homebake’s very own live ROCKWIZ extravaganza! www.sbs.com.au/rockwiz

They’re one of Australia’s biggest exports, currently undertaking a global tour which will see them trek from Reykjavik to Cincinnati, São Paulo to the Isle of White. Euphoric Melbourne dance-rock pioneers CUT COPY brim with hypnotic hooks, organic psychedelia and vintage gear grooves. Their latest listen, Zonoscope, debuted at #3 on the ARIA charts thanks to tracks like “Take Me Over” and latest single “Blink And You’ll Miss a Revolution”. In CUT COPY’s 8.6/10 album review, Pitchfork asked, “Even in the dead of winter, Zonoscope does its job beautifully. Imagine how it’ll sound when you don’t have to layer up to go outside?” http://cutcopy.net

Drum roll please…thirty years and more than eight million album sales, Homebake HQ is thrilled to announce ICEHOUSE will perform their seminal debut, Flowers, in 2011 under the title, ICEHOUSE plays FLOWERS. Led by Iva Davies, ICEHOUSE initially formed as Flowers in 1977, their edgy, new wave synth-pop quickly finding an audience with 1980 single “Can’t Help Myself”. Landing in the top 10, it was followed by “We Can Get Together” and “Walls”, the album becoming of our biggest-selling debuts of all time. Since then, ICEHOUSE have sold over 28 times platinum albums in Australiasia alone, and in May Universal Music Australia released a 30th Anniversary Edition of Flowers. This will be VERY special performance from Iva Davies, Paul Wheeler, Paul Gildea, Glenn Reither, Steve Bull and other special guests. www.icehouse-ivadavies.com

He’s supported Kanye West and Justin Timberlake, while collaborator Mark Ronson describes him as one of the best singers he’s ever worked with. With a brand new single due for release in 2011, we’re pleased as punch that one of our favourite Aussie talents is returning to Homebake: DANIEL MERRIWEATHER. The Melbourne-raised, New York resident’s 2009 disc, Love & War, was a massive international success, landing at #2 on the UK charts and selling over 300,000 copies with hits like “Change” and “Red”. Now the 28-year-old is gearing up to release LP #3 in 2012, which you’ll get a taste of at Homebake. Don’t miss DANIEL MERRIWEATHER! www.facebook.com/danielmerriweather

Five albums in and one of Australia’s premier bands – Fremantle trio ESKIMO JOE – are stronger than ever. With eight ARIA wins so far and multi-platinum album sales in 14 years, Ghosts of the Past is the title of Kav Temperley, Stu MacLeod and Joel Quartermain’s latest offering, due out August 12 (Warner). Upon its release current single “Love is a Drug” became the #1 most added track to Australian radio, fans frantically snapping up tickets to their recent sold-out acoustic “When We Were Kids” tour. Another national trek is planned for September. No strangers to Homebake, welcome back ESKIMO JOE! www.eskimojoe.net

With a platinum single and the #12 spot on triple j’s 2010 Hottest 100 in “Rapunzel” – not to mention the claim of being the ONLY Australian artist to debut at number one on the ARIA Album charts this year – 2011 is the year of DRAPHT! It’s a mammoth accomplishment for Perth’s Paul Ridge, who dropped his fourth disc, The Life of Riley, on self-funded label The Ayems back in April. Rhymes are in this wordsmith’s blood: from early offerings Pale Rider (2003) and Who Am I (2005), to breakout LP Brothers Grimm (2008), which delivered the addictive “Jimmy Ricard”. Now, DRAPHT will deliver his biggest Homebake set yet. http://drapht.com.au

We love these special moments….Is there a more seminal Australian soundtrack than “Wide Open Road”? Founded in 1978, Perth-born outfit THE TRIFFIDS continue to inspire. The legendary band will celebrate the life of founder/songwriter David McComb (who passed away in 1999) with a very special performance, featuring stellar guest vocalists. With their starkly beautiful sound, THE TRIFFIDS catalogue – including 1986’s amazing Born Sandy Devotional – has been re-discovered by a whole new generation thanks to recent re-issues. In 2006 Nick Cave wrote of McComb’s songs, “Whether calling from the baking salt pans of the West Australian desert or the darks of a broken heart … their gist is hopeful and brave.” www.thetriffids.com

It’s a rare treat to catch Melbourne synth-pop collective ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI in Australia. Currently touring Moment Bends, their acclaimed fourth album, across Europe, the “Contact High” group will head to the Domain for a special gig following on from their set at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney. Moment Bends is, says Cameron Bird, “Based on pop in the pure sense of the world: the songs are straight to the point, direct in a way we haven’t been in the past.” With recent stints at London’s Lovebox Weekender, Germany’s Melt! and Belgium’s Dour Festival, ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI will have you dancing in no time! www.architectureinhelsinki.com

A decade ago they ignited with Highly Evolved, the explosive classic triple j listeners recently voted in at #37 in the Hottest 100 Australian Albums of All Time. Forced to withdraw from a planned set in 2008, THE VINES will make a triumphant return to Homebake in 2011. With over two million albums sold, Craig Nicholls and co recently released their fifth LP in Future Primitive (Sony), produced by Chris Colonna (Bumblebeez) and mixed by Julien Delfaud (Phoenix) – with “spiritual guidance” by Philippe Zdar (Cassius). Lead single “Gimme Love” explodes with the classic sound of THE VINES, the band funnelling their past into a brilliant future. http://thevines.com

They’re one of the most prolific bands to come out of Australia, and in April celebrated their 30th anniversary with a sold-out show at the Sydney Opera House. Following on from their induction into the ARIA Hall Of Fame – Steve Kilbey’s speech going down in legend – THE CHURCH will perform at Homebake in full electric mode. Highly influential to bands such as The Smiths thanks to classic tracks like “The Unguarded Moment” and the unforgettable “Under the Milky Way”, Rolling Stone awarded 2009’s Untitled #23 five stars. With 20 albums so far, THE CHURCHSteve Kilbey, Peter Koppes, Tim Powles and Marty Willson-Piper – won’t be slowing down any time soon. www.thechurchband.net

Its 12 months since they released EP Dark Storm, but THE JEZABELS aren’t resting. In stores September 16 is Prisoner – the debut album from the indie-pop song smiths, who landed two tracks in the Hottest 100 this year with “Mace Spray” (#16) and “Easy to Love” (#49). With recent overseas stints to the USA, UK, Canada and Europe, 2011 marks THE JEZABELS first appearance at Homebake. Prisoner was recorded in Sydney with producer Lachlan Mitchell, and mixed by Peter Katis (the National). “Hayley Mary’s performance stole the show, like Kate Bush crossed with Karen O,” wrote Clash mag of a recent gig. Single “Endless Summer” is out now. www.thejezabels.com

A global star-in-waiting at 21; that’s NZ pop sensation KIMBRA, who is heating up for the September release of her debut album Vow (Warner) – recorded with M-Phazes (Pharoahe Monch) and Francois Tetaz (Bertie Blackman). Just last week the “Cameo Lover” singer beat 4,000 other entrants to take out the 2011 Vanda and Young song writing competition, over the last year she racked up over half a million YouTube views of “Settle Down” – a track which also took out first place in the Pop category of the International Songwriting Competition. And then there’s her scene-stealing cameo in Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to Know” clip… Ladies and gentlemen, it’s official. KIMBRA has arrived. www.facebook.com/kimbramusic

From popping up on BBC’s “Later With Jools Holland”, profiles in Mojo magazine, to upcoming festival gigs in Edinburgh, Denmark and Antwerp: C.W. STONEKING hasn’t slowed down one inch since 2008’s Jungle Blues. With band the Primitive Horn Orchestra by his side, the banjo, hillbilly and calypso lovin’ bluesman might have grown up in Papunya, NT, but his love of 1920’s Mississippi rhythms has followed him throughout this life. C.W.’s debut appearance at Homebake marks his first series of shows back on Aussie soil for the release of his forthcoming third album. C.W. STONEKING is truly one of a kind. http://cwstoneking.com

You’ve been hearing them across the triple j airwaves via their debut album, Escapades (released in October 2010), and now they’re making their very first trek south to Homebake: infectious Brisbane indie-pop quintet HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY. Nominated for the Export Achievement Award at the upcoming Queensland Music Awards thanks to overseas trips to the USA and Canada for showcases at South By Southwest and Canadian Music Week, the “Coming Around” outfit enjoyed a sell-out national tour back in May – and are currently tinkering away at album #2. With a rapidly growing fan-base, we’re stoked to welcome HUNGRY KIDS OF HUNGARY on board. www.hungrykidsofhungary.com

It’s another first-time Homebake performance for Melbourne ILLY, whose sophomore release The Chase went down as one of the most talked about hip-hop offerings of 2010. Having honed his festival chops over the past year at Pyramid Rock, Come Together, Groovin’ the Moo and Coaster, ILLY (aka Al Murray) shows no signs of slowing down. Following singles “Cigarettes” and “It Can Wait” (featuring local chanteuse Owl Eyes), ILLY recently completed his law degree – and, after a stint of travelling overseas, the talented MC is already planning to head back into the studio to work on album number three. Make him welcome! www.illyal.com

Dropping their debut album this month in Life Above Ground is New Zealand’s AVALANCHE CITY: the brainchild of Dave Baxter, a musical maestro who wrote, produced, recorded and plays every instrument on the sparkling pop offering. Over 11,000 people initially downloaded Life… upon its release, Dave later inking a global deal with Warner Music and landing a #1 digital album in NZ via iTunes. Currently on the road with Busby Marou post showcases in LA, NYC and London, AVALANCHE CITY moves from stripped down folk to shimmering pop hooks, tracks like gold-selling “Love, Love, Love” coming to life onstage with mandolin, ukulele, glockenspiel, accordion and more. http://avalanchecity.com

Heralded as an act to watch in mags like Spin and Rolling Stone is New Zealand-via-Portland lo-fi maestro UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA. Things felt surreal for 32-year-old Ruban Nielson in late 2010 when Pitchfork picked up “Ffunny Ffrends” a mere 24 hours after he posted it online. Now, with the release of last month’s scuzz-pop, eponymous debut album (Spunk Records), Ruban and band mates (now a trio) are busy touring the globe supporting the likes of Yuck, Toro Y Moi and the Flaming Lips. In 2011 they’ll make their very first appearance at Homebake: make sure you catch them to see what all the fuss is about! http://unknownmortalorchestra.com

Taking their first step onto Homebake’s stages this year is Sydney trio Thomas Rawle, Angus Gardiner and Tom Myers – aka PAPA VS PRETTY. The lads bowled us over with “Wrecking Ball”, while they landed a feature album spot on triple j back in May via their extraordinary debut, United In Isolation. Recorded with producer Paul McKercher (You Am I) and mixer Scott Horscroft (Silverchair), tracks like “One Of the Animals” followed on from 2009’s Paul Dempsey produced Heavy Harm EP. Check out their blistering cover of Angus & Julia Stone’s “Big Jet Plane” at this year’s APRAs for a taste of PAPA VS PRETTY’s raw live power. www.papavspretty.com

Not many outfits can pinpoint their inception to the 2000 Olympics – but Sydney hip-hop/dancehall duo KILLAQUEENZ aren’t your average group. Kween G and Belizean Bombshell originally hail from Uganda and Belize, the pair wowing with their raw, hard-hitting debut Sistarhood (Grindin’). It featured production from local masters Katalyst and M-Phazes, and since then the duo have hit Oz’s festival circuit (Good Vibrations, Parklife, Falls) and supported the likes of Lady Gaga, Public Enemy, Wu-Tang Can, South Rakkas Crew (who worked with the duo on ultra hot single “Double Up”), Bone Thugs N Harmony, NASA and more. So get your dancing shoes ready for KILLAQUEENZ! www.myspace.com/killarqueenz

At just 12-years-old Jordan Arts and Sam McCarthy knew something was up – each lad coincidentally bringing a Jimi Hendrix record to school for show and tell. KIDS OF 88’s blissful, ‘80s inspired sound is igniting dance floors thanks to their 2010 debut album, Sugarpills, with club killers “My House”, “Downtown” and “Just a Little Bit”. The Auckland duo landed gigs alongside the Scissor Sisters and Passion Pit, while last December KIDS OF 88 headed to far-flung capitals like Paris and Barcelona with Ke$ha. Says Sam, “Our name sort of captures what we’re doing, picking up bits and pieces of pop culture, sifting the debris from yesteryear – and making something new.” http://kidsof88.com

Those who caught his sold-out trek back in April/May will agree: Brighton-born Mike Rosenberg is something special. As PASSENGER, Rosenberg – a Neil Young fan and one talented singer/songwriter – delivered one of 2010’s most fascinating listens in Fight of the Crow, a disc funded by busking and enlisting the talents of Lior, Kate Miller Heidke, Dead Letter Chorus, Josh Pyke and more. Currently on tour in the UK where he’s played with the John Butler Trio and Ed Sheeran, PASSENGER will return to Oz in November, bringing along his third album (recorded in Sydney in April). Homebake welcomes this honorary Aussie home. www.passengerofficial.com

He’s one of our most (in)famous international exports of stage and screen & NOAH TAYLOR has been toiling around the world of film and music since at least 1986. He has played everything from a dog ‘Down Rusty Down’ to a young Adolf Hitler ‘Max’, most recently he can be seen terrorising folks in Texas in the controversial and brutal slasher pic ‘Red White & Blue’. Since relocating to the UK about 10 years ago, music has become his primary focus, playing and recording under various guises but on this occasion we welcome NOAH TAYLOR AND THE SLOPPY BOYS, featuring Ed Clayton-Jones – (The Wreckery ) on lead guitar and Cec Condon (The Mess Hall) on drums who’ll make their debut Homebake performance. Expect tracks from their forthcoming LP ‘Live Free or Die!!!’ with a performance inspired by the heads down, play loud, play fast ethos of Australian underground rock! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Noah-Taylor-The-Sloppy-Boys/236444576380118

Shaking up the local hip-hop scene is Adelaide VENTS. In 2011 the imposing “Love Song” rapper followed up debut LP Hard To Kill (2007) with Marked For Death, his first long player for the Hilltop Hoods’ run label Golden Era Records. With lead single “History of the World” currently garnering airplay across the country, VENTS latest effort was laid down with producer Trials (Funkoars), who has steered releases from Drapht, Ash Grunwald and Abbe May. With a recent national tour under his belt, VENTS is set to support one of hip-hop’s most legendary outfits in Perth: the Wu-Tang Clan. Get ready for one heck of a battle. www.myspace.com/ventz

Each and every year HOMEBAKE embraces a number of charities and causes and despite the 16th anniversary celebrations, 2011 welcomes the wonderful organisation known as Youngcare – being a non denominational, non govt, non profit organisation devoted to raising awareness of the plight of young Australians living in aged care. Youngcare was established in 2005 following the inspirational story of one woman’s battle to find relevant and dignified care. Currently more than 6,500 young Australians with full-time care needs are living in aged care simply because there are few alternatives. Youngcare is committed to raising awareness of the issue across the nation so that we can drive change and create real choices for young Australians and their families. Further information at – http://www.youngcare.com.au/

With Youngcare receiving the nominal limelight, we also draw your attention to our other cause being a charity initiative we also intend to tell the world about – You Can! Sony Foundation Australia, together with CanTeen, is working to improve survival outcomes for young Australians with cancer through their ‘You Can’ campaign. You Can aims to raise $15 million, through mobile phone recycling, to build youth cancer centres of excellence in Australia. These centres will address the need for specialised care for Australia’s ‘forgotten generation’, 15 – 30 year olds cancer patients. Further information can be found here – http://youcan.org.au/

As we commence the many months of promotion for Homebake 2011, we are proud to be aligned with Youngcare and You Can. Full details can be found on the dedicated pages on the Homebake site – http://www.homebake.com

And the activities keep coming! Alongside the music is our hugely popular HOMEBAKE Cinema Pavilion (featuring award winning and nominated short films by upcoming Australian/NZ producers & directors expertly programmed by producer/actor extraordinaire, Kieran Darcy Smith of ‘Two Hands’, ‘The Cave’, ‘September’, ‘The Square’ & ‘Animal Kingdom’ fame. This year will also see a few special musical performances in amongst the films to be announced. Incidentally, Kieran’s debut feature film as director and co-writer, ‘WISH YOU WERE HERE’, starring Joel Edgerton, Teresa Palmer and Felicity Price has recently been completed and will be released through Hopscotch Films and Level K in late 2011. Brand new in 2011 is the HOMEBAKE Comedy Stage, presented by the ever popular Sydney Comedy Festival, which will feature some of Australia’s most beloved comedians as well as the very best emerging artists in a rollicking showcase of world-class comedy. Full details to be revealed shortly.

Once again, it’s a huge and massive start to this very special year and inspired line-up – our first big names announced with more to come – and totalling over fifty combined artists, performers and comedy acts. HOMEBAKE Music Film & Arts Festival 2011 – ‘The Classic Edition’ is destined to be one of the most memorable and finest music festivals kicking off the summer period and will also offer a variety of extra attractions & activities including multimedia, our famous international food fare, a plethora of market and information stalls, roving performers, surprises & much, much more. It will be a massive day packed with the biggest musical talent Australia (& NZ) has to offer plus much more and it’s still the best value for money festival in town. Note we provide this warning well in advance, HOMEBAKE 2009 did sell out in advance, so please make sure to purchase tickets early to avoid disappointment (& hiked prices!!). Stay tuned for more special announcements & ‘money can’t buy’ competitions via our presenting partners and don’t forget the triple j unearthed competition whereby one lucky band gets to perform amongst a ‘classic’ line-up of superstars at HOMEBAKE 2011.

Proudly presented by triple j, triple j magazine, Channel [V], Max and Drum Media
