Yes folks, Sydney city’s historic Domain will once again come alive with the sound of music, film, laughs and more with the much anticipated return of Homebake after having had a short break in 2010. Over the years, HOMEBAKE has played host to a virtual swag of national and internationally famous local superstars, and has now matured to become one of Australia’s most important and respected festival events, and for this very reason, we are thrilled (& forever grateful) to return bigger and brighter than ever with our most musically eclectic, stunning and incredibly talented selection of the finest artists borne out of the Southern Hemisphere.
Despite the ‘classic’ moniker – & similar to other major festival events worldwide nowadays – Homebake always pays dignified host and respect to those purveyors of music genres of the past, and this year sees us welcome some of the most honoured musicians in Australian music history alongside the biggest contemporary names (including comedy and film). So…for the young, the old, and the fun at heart, it is with great pleasure and excitement that Homebake 2011 presents…
Get excited….with their exceptional power, this December in the Domain, Australia’s NICK CAVE returns to unleash the cinematic rock that is GRINDERMAN – the band’s first ever appearance at Homebake. As GRINDERMAN, Cave, Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos conjure up a sexual onslaught, from psychedelic melodramas (the gleeful “No Pussy Blues”) to seductive singles (“Heathen Child”). GRINDERMAN have delivered two internationally acclaimed albums to date, and were recently asked by Portishead to perform at London’s ATP I’ll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace. Josh Homme (QOTSA), meanwhile, has lent his remixing skills to latest track “Mickey Mouse and the Goodbye Man” while the track “Heathen Child” is on the shortlist for MOJO Honours 2011 for Best Single. Nick Cave recently paired with the mesmerizing Neko Case to record a cover of The Zombies’ “She’s Not There” for True Blood Season 3. “There’s a speed and intensity to Grinderman 2 unheard before,” wrote Pitchfork. Making her debut appearance at Homebake this year is Pip Brown, aka LADYHAWKE. The 31-year-old ‘Paris is Burning’ star is set to ignite once again in 2011, with the release of her highly-anticipated second album (due out soon). With contagious hits like “Dusk Till Dawn” and “My Delirium”, Pip took home six New Zealand Music Awards and two ARIAs in 2009, over 100,000 British fans keeping her disc in the charts for a staggering 33 weeks. We’re chuffed to announce the return of the ‘worldly based’ PNAU to Australia, who’ll perform old favourites and hot new tracks from their brand new album, Soft Universe. Drum roll please…thirty years and more than eight million album sales, Homebake HQ is thrilled to announce ICEHOUSE will perform their seminal debut, Flowers, in 2011 under the title, ICEHOUSE plays FLOWERS. Led by Iva Davies, ICEHOUSE initially formed as Flowers in 1977, their edgy, new wave synth-pop quickly finding an audience with 1980 single “Can’t Help Myself”. Landing in the top 10, it was followed by “We Can Get Together” and “Walls”, the album becoming of our biggest-selling debuts of all time. We love these special moments….Is there a more seminal Australian soundtrack than “Wide Open Road”? Founded in 1978, Perth-born outfit THE TRIFFIDS continue to inspire. The legendary band will celebrate the life of founder/songwriter David McComb (who passed away in 1999) with a very special performance, featuring stellar guest vocalists. With their starkly beautiful sound, THE TRIFFIDS catalogue – including 1986’s amazing Born Sandy Devotional – has been re-discovered by a whole new generation thanks to recent re-issues. It’s a rare treat to catch Melbourne synth-pop collective ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI in Australia. Currently touring Moment Bends, their acclaimed fourth album, across Europe, the “Contact High” group will head to the Domain for a special gig following on from their set at the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Sydney. Its 12 months since they released EP Dark Storm, but THE JEZABELS aren’t resting. In stores September 16 is Prisoner – the debut album from the indie-pop song smiths, who landed two tracks in the Hottest 100 this year with “Mace Spray” (#16) and “Easy to Love” (#49). With recent overseas stints to the USA, UK, Canada and Europe, 2011 marks THE JEZABELS first appearance at Homebake. Prisoner was recorded in Sydney with producer Lachlan Mitchell, and mixed by Peter Katis (the National). “Hayley Mary’s performance stole the show, like Kate Bush crossed with Karen O,” wrote Clash mag of a recent gig. A global star-in-waiting at 21; that’s NZ pop sensation KIMBRA, who is heating up for the September release of her debut album Vow (Warner) – recorded with M-Phazes (Pharoahe Monch) and Francois Tetaz (Bertie Blackman). Just last week the “Cameo Lover” singer beat 4,000 other entrants to take out the 2011 Vanda and Young song writing competition, over the last year she racked up over half a million YouTube views of “Settle Down” – a track which also took out first place in the Pop category of the International Songwriting Competition. Taking their first step onto Homebake’s stages this year is Sydney trio Thomas Rawle, Angus Gardiner and Tom Myers – aka PAPA VS PRETTY. The lads bowled us over with “Wrecking Ball”, while they landed a feature album spot on triple j back in May via their extraordinary debut, United In Isolation. Not many outfits can pinpoint their inception to the 2000 Olympics – but Sydney hip-hop/dancehall duo KILLAQUEENZ aren’t your average group. Kween G and Belizean Bombshell originally hail from Uganda and Belize, the pair wowing with their raw, hard-hitting debut Sistarhood (Grindin’). At just 12-years-old Jordan Arts and Sam McCarthy knew something was up – each lad coincidentally bringing a Jimi Hendrix record to school for show and tell. KIDS OF 88’s blissful, ‘80s inspired sound is igniting dance floors thanks to their 2010 debut album, Sugarpills, with club killers “My House”, “Downtown” and “Just a Little Bit”. The Auckland duo landed gigs alongside the Scissor Sisters and Passion Pit, while last December KIDS OF 88 headed to far-flung capitals like Paris and Barcelona with Ke$ha. Those who caught his sold-out trek back in April/May will agree: Brighton-born Mike Rosenberg is something special. As PASSENGER, Rosenberg – a Neil Young fan and one talented singer/songwriter – delivered one of 2010’s most fascinating listens in Fight of the Crow, a disc funded by busking and enlisting the talents of Lior, Kate Miller Heidke, Dead Letter Chorus, Josh Pyke and more. Currently on tour in the UK where he’s played with the John Butler Trio and Ed Sheeran, PASSENGER will return to Oz in November, bringing along his third album (recorded in Sydney in April). He’s one of our most (in)famous international exports of stage and screen & NOAH TAYLOR has been toiling around the world of film and music since at least 1986. He has played everything from a dog ‘Down Rusty Down’ to a young Adolf Hitler ‘Max’, most recently he can be seen terrorising folks in Texas in the controversial and brutal slasher pic ‘Red White & Blue’. Since relocating to the UK about 10 years ago, music has become his primary focus, playing and recording under various guises but on this occasion we welcome NOAH TAYLOR AND THE SLOPPY BOYS, featuring Ed Clayton-Jones – (The Wreckery ) on lead guitar and Cec Condon (The Mess Hall) on drums who’ll make their debut Homebake performance. Shaking up the local hip-hop scene is Adelaide VENTS. In 2011 the imposing “Love Song” rapper followed up debut LP Hard To Kill (2007) with Marked For Death, his first long player for the Hilltop Hoods’ run label Golden Era Records. With lead single “History of the World” currently garnering airplay across the country, VENTS latest effort was laid down with producer Trials (Funkoars), who has steered releases from Drapht, Ash Grunwald and Abbe May. Each and every year HOMEBAKE embraces a number of charities and causes and despite the 16th anniversary celebrations, 2011 welcomes the wonderful organisation known as Youngcare – being a non denominational, non govt, non profit organisation devoted to raising awareness of the plight of young Australians living in aged care. Youngcare was established in 2005 following the inspirational story of one woman’s battle to find relevant and dignified care. Currently more than 6,500 young Australians with full-time care needs are living in aged care simply because there are few alternatives. Youngcare is committed to raising awareness of the issue across the nation so that we can drive change and create real choices for young Australians and their families. With Youngcare receiving the nominal limelight, we also draw your attention to our other cause being a charity initiative we also intend to tell the world about – You Can! Sony Foundation Australia, together with CanTeen, is working to improve survival outcomes for young Australians with cancer through their ‘You Can’ campaign. You Can aims to raise $15 million, through mobile phone recycling, to build youth cancer centres of excellence in Australia. Brand new in 2011 is the HOMEBAKE Comedy Stage, presented by the ever popular Sydney Comedy Festival, which will feature some of Australia’s most beloved comedians as well as the very best emerging artists in a rollicking showcase of world-class comedy.
